Middle class entitlement

This afternoon I was awoken by the twats across the road holding a open air recital. But instead of playing in their back garden they thought it would be a good idea to play in front of my ground floor flat on the drive outside my bedroom window. There was a cellist a violinist and some buffoon playing the flute.

I work nights delivering essential supplies for the NHS.

So I did what any sane person would do in my situation. I opened my front room windows turned up my pioneer amplifier and played 90s rave classics.

Well I think it is unfair on the OP as outside his property and also as much as it’s nice to lift spirits in this situation,I thought we had to social distance and stay in our own gardens.

I don’t think it’s unfair. I live with a police officer who often gets woken up when he’s on nights. It’s not in the forefront of people’s minds that others are sleeping during the day. Whenever he’s stuck his head out the window to ask the neighbours to keep it down there’s never been an issue. I think it just comes down to people forgetting others are on different schedules, rather than it being selfish actions.

I get some of the OPs frustration of being woken up after a night shift.

However i cant see any relevance to class as per the title and was always brought up that two wrongs dont make a right.

The musiscians were trying to cheer up the street. Such actions have been welcomed and shared on social media.

Im sorry but im with the musicians on this one.

Going back to the class point... Are they middle class becuase they play instraments or because they have a garden! Which makes me wonder are those Italians singing opera from their balconies middle class too

It sounds like they were being unreasonable, probably not purposely but through lack of thought.

The sensible thing would have been to explain you are on nights and ask them to stop or move elsewhere. That way they would be more aware in the future whereas now they probably just think you are a dick.

Doesn't the fact that OP is in the industry they are currently in technically mean they are as middle class as the musicians they are choosing to be snobby about? Medical school ain't cheap... or for the short haul.

The sensible thing would have been to explain you are on nights and ask them to stop or move elsewhere. That way they would be more aware in the future whereas now they probably just think you are a dick."

Perhaps it wasnt important to him not to come across as a dick

"In a word....yes

Perhaps you would change your tune (pardon the pun) when someone gathers outside your bedroom window, and wakes you up "

So you couldn’t of said “ scuse me guys but I’ve been working nights isn’t it ok if you play elsewhere please”, see it’s not hard to make a reasonable request is it ?

However i cant see any relevance to class as per the title and was always brought up that two wrongs dont make a right.

The musiscians were trying to cheer up the street. Such actions have been welcomed and shared on social media.

Im sorry but im with the musicians on this one.

Nothing wrong with what they did. It was the way they went about it. They have a perfectly fine back garden. Not outside my window. When I’m trying to sleep. Of course they didn’t know I was asleep. But they never thought for one moment that their actions might impact others.

They are middle class because they live in a £1 million plus house. Of course maybe they are lottery winners.

Mrs Absolutebeginner was on a night shift last night on the covid itu ward. We try to tiptoe around the house but the neighbours and people passing by all have their own lives and are not privileged to the information that she’s trying to sleep. Try earmuffs and a blindfold or does that sound too kinky for you?

If you weren't breaking any rules and can play your music until 11 at night, why cant they?

The way I see it is that the world operates by day and sleeps at night. You working nights has no real bearing on what people choose to do in the daytime. If you choose, or have to work nights it's your problem not theirs and expecting the whole neighbourhood to be quiet so that you aren't inconvenienced seem like a more entitled attitude than the people you are complaining about.

The nuances of class will of course differ from country to country. How many are there, what makes you belong to different ones etc. Bourdieu, in France for example wrote that musical tastes were invariably linked to class and there’s even been more recent research in a British context that concludes the same. I don’t think it’s an unfair assumption to assume that they were middle class (if such a thing even exists) although OP is certainly projecting in this thread which I completely agree should be condemned.

Last week they did the same thing but outside their own place. No problem.

But to cross the street and play within 4 meters of my bedroom window? It doesn’t matter that I was asleep, they weren’t to know. But they could of used some common sense.

Have you considered that other neighbours in your flats might have enjoyed hearing them play last week and asked them to do a performance?"

Maybe. Doubtful but maybe. If that was the case the people in the flats would of come out to listen. Nobody did

"I would have taken aim

I was thinking about calling the police.

12 hour shift driving for the NHS.

I think the cops would of taken my side. why would they take you’re side? Bearing in mind you are inflicting horrid rave music on you’re neighbours

I wasn’t breaking the rules on the lockdown. I can play music up until 11pm tonight. No they don’t know what I do. I live in a council block. They play classical music in the street. I don’t want anything to do with them

Maybe because they chose to play outside my window?

You might own the window but you dont own the street outside.

Were they trespassing on your garden?

No they were not.

Just the same as I’m allowed to play dance music at high volume. Inconsiderate by both parties.

Making noise in the daytime is not inconsiderate, it's normal. If they are not on your property its none of your business.

You’re correct of course. But I thought we were only supposed to go out for essential purposes.

Last week they did the same thing but outside their own place. No problem.

But to cross the street and play within 4 meters of my bedroom window? It doesn’t matter that I was asleep, they weren’t to know. But they could of used some common sense.

Not necessarily. The elderly and vulnerable are supposed to be shielding. They could have been in their windows watching, This sort of thing is being done a lot and appreciated by those trapped Inside.

"This afternoon I was awoken by the twats across the road holding a open air recital.

I opened my front room windows turned up my pioneer amplifier and played 90s rave classics."

Are you working tonight?

I’m normally a construction worker. But the site I was working at closed for a month. I know someone who works in NHS supply chain. He said they are crying out for drivers. So I started two weeks ago. Yes it’s very busy. First day I was there 700,000 face masks turned up. 3 hours unloading. Last week 2000 laptops. 5000 body bags. The only thing that seems in short supply is hand sanitiser.

Not necessarily. The elderly and vulnerable are supposed to be shielding. They could have been in their windows watching, This sort of thing is being done a lot and appreciated by those trapped Inside.

It does happen a lot. But either livestream or from their own property not in the street.

Really? Are you sure?

https://youtu.be/LVp3DpnIB7s

That looks like someone’s porch.

That's because it is, it belongs to the 78 year old woman they are performing for. I doubt your elderly neighnours have that luxury as they live in a block of flats.

Either way it is not being done via live stream of from their own property as you claim happens.

Buts it’s not in a public place either. I would of gave them the full Dolby atmos 5:1 experience as well

What is the significance/difference in it being in a public place of their porch? Either way it's none of your business.

https://youtu.be/MtLAECWmIPE

Here's a public one, would you have drowned them out too?

"

With great pleasure if it’s in a public place it’s everyone’s business, hence the word “public”

But they could of used some common sense.

perhaps walking across the road is their daily exercise

Hey. I enjoy Rachmaninoff and I'm fuckin' scum. "

I'm middle class but the music I like is scummy

If a neighbour does something which annoys you, chat to them. If I woke someone up (I cut the grass this afternoon) and they told me, I would apologise.

Most people are nice if you are nice to them.

I’m not that type of person. I’m a bit awkward socially. I hate small talk and pretending to be interested. Nodding and waving. All a pretence.

I mind my own business normally. I never play loud music, hold raucous parties or play musical instruments outside other people’s dwellings.

Interesting question. I think that’s for a another thread though

Not much I suppose. I think I would have to knock on their door. I know everyone who lives in my block. It’s quite small 8 flats. The people upstairs use it as a second home they are never there.

When they first moved in they installed hardwood floors without proper insulation. I went and spoke to the chap, and everything was sorted out. So I can be reasonable sometimes.

Have you considered that other neighbours in your flats might have enjoyed hearing them play last week and asked them to do a performance?

Maybe. Doubtful but maybe. If that was the case the people in the flats would of come out to listen. Nobody did

With great pleasure if it’s in a public place it’s everyone’s business, hence the word “public”

you would take pleasure in drowning out the family and friends of a young lady with special needs and stop them singing happy birthday?

I didn’t watch the link you sent. I said it to make a point.

Nobody is supposed to be out at the moment unless for certain requirements.

I didn’t watch the YouTube link you posted. But I’m presuming it was recorded before the lockdown?

Otherwise, however well intentioned their motives were , they should of strongly reconsidered their actions.

So you act without knowing what is going on? To make a point, yeah?

Just like you did when you put your stereo out of the window? And let's be honest, it was nothing to do with them being out during lockdown, it was just because they woke you up.

Yes they did wake me up. They wouldn’t of woke me up if they stayed across the street outside their own house. Normally I wouldn’t care if the Hare Krishna and boys brigades played a jamboree up and down the street.

What about if your neighbour woke you up by playing the prodigy -your love, turned up to number 11?*next door neighbour

So why the need to react like you did today?

"This afternoon I was awoken by the twats across the road holding a open air recital.

Are you working tonight?

Hope you get some sleep tomorrow.

No back on days tomorrow. Delivering to care homes. Last week I mainly delivered to dialysis centres, and GP surgeries.

Is it busier than normal?

I’m normally a construction worker. But the site I was working at closed for a month. I know someone who works in NHS supply chain. He said they are crying out for drivers. So I started two weeks ago. Yes it’s very busy. First day I was there 700,000 face masks turned up. 3 hours unloading. Last week 2000 laptops. 5000 body bags. The only thing that seems in short supply is hand sanitiser. "

Oh wow that's brilliant! (Apart from the body bags ) You are a volunteer. Good guy.

I can’t see why this has anything to do with middle class entitlement. A polite word would have probably sufficed. Overreaction as far as I’m concerned. They probably didn’t mean badly.

And I’m supposed to be overwhelmed with joy? Applaud their public spirit?

Yes they are entitled to do that.

I was just showing them my entitlement as well.

But the chap upstairs didnt show any consideration before you talked to him, and are you saying the family deliberately came across the road to wake you up?

He made an honest mistake that was out of his control.

They never. Their actions were deliberate. I probably went about things the wrong way. But the way I was feeling at the time, I think was quite restrained.

If I went out I would of made things a lot worse.

But you said you dont know why they came across the road and they weren't to know you were on nights.

"

Because I was angry at being woken up.

Plus they shouldn’t be out in a lockdown. I’ve lived here 15 years. They never did this before. I suspect that they have a perfectly pleasant back garden. Why come outside my window. They shouldn’t be out in the first place etc. 15 people died in the 12 hours at the hospital I work.

The message is simple stay home save lives. I suppose you would of been overjoyed in my situation.

" What's the relevance of the middle class comment? "

Because the play classical & play instruments I imagine.

I remember working away in my garden & a neighbor coming over screaming, balling & name calling cos I woke him up....my reply to him.

1. It's daytime.

2. I cannot revolve my life around that of my neighbours.

3. Here's a set of earplugs.

And continued. There was no need for the rudeness or aggression and I certainly wasn't being intimidated by it.

But they could of used some common sense.

perhaps walking across the road is their daily exercise

Have you considered that other neighbours in your flats might have enjoyed hearing them play last week and asked them to do a performance?

Maybe. Doubtful but maybe. If that was the case the people in the flats would of come out to listen. Nobody did

So why the need to react like you did today?

The chap upstairs didn’t deliberately install the flooring without proper soundproofing. It was a mistake by the cowboys he employed.

The ensemble today came out in the middle of a lockdown, came across the street, for what reason I don’t know.

And started playing within 4 meters of my bedroom window.

And I’m supposed to be overwhelmed with joy? Applaud their public spirit?

I wouldn't have been that bothered. I dont like being woken up but I dont get angry about it.

I'm sure as a tradesman you have woken up plenty of people on night shift, as have I. I've also been woken up by all sorts, most notably a full on marching band twice a year on sunday mornings. Shit happens.

And started playing within 4 meters of my bedroom window.

And I’m supposed to be overwhelmed with joy? Applaud their public spirit?

Yes they are entitled to do that.

I was just showing them my entitlement as well.

But the chap upstairs didnt show any consideration before you talked to him, and are you saying the family deliberately came across the road to wake you up?

He made an honest mistake that was out of his control.

They never. Their actions were deliberate. I probably went about things the wrong way. But the way I was feeling at the time, I think was quite restrained.

If I went out I would of made things a lot worse.

But you said you dont know why they came across the road and they weren't to know you were on nights.

Sweet Jesus. Why did they come outside my fucking bedroom window when they have a pavement outside their own house? And why were they out in the first place?

If you had spoken to them you might have found out."

But they could of used some common sense.

perhaps walking across the road is their daily exercise

Have you considered that other neighbours in your flats might have enjoyed hearing them play last week and asked them to do a performance?

Maybe. Doubtful but maybe. If that was the case the people in the flats would of come out to listen. Nobody did

So why the need to react like you did today?
