Your era of choice ...?

I was talking to a friend earlier and I noticed she had a YouTube link on her profile page. Bring the curious cat I am, I followed it and landed on Whitney Houston signing “I want to dance with somebody”.

I remember the song well from my youth, I even remember dancing along with a few girls to it. But it felt nostalgic and whole I’ve never had hyperthymesia, suddenly I recalled with amazing clarity a whole host of great memories.

It got me thinking about what it was about the 80’s (and 90’s) that made it feel like an age of innocence.

I reflected on the way, as kids, we’d play. The “we were kicked out after breakfast and told not to come back until tea time” debate has been had many times, but it’s true that we didn’t connect with people in the same way we do now, where everything is so immediate. Effort had to be made to cultivate a relationship.

We found ways to be creative together, but because we were super intelligent or trying to be all virtuous - it was simply all there was to do and we managed it because we weren’t distracted by devices/medium. I’m sure if you’d have given any child from the 80’ or 90’s an iPad, they’d spend hours on it too and quickly become addicted.

And the music. It wasn’t actually much to my taste, but the 80’s and 90’s was such a happy time for music. People had so much fun at discos and clubs. The artists had fun. The music sounded fun and jolly. In terms of pop, what do we have today? Men singing about sl*ts they’ve banged and men whose asses they’ve popped a cap into. (Not that sort of cap, you kinky fabsters!).

(That’s not to say I don’t like todays music - there is a lot of good stuff about, but I am just making a point about the fact that much of the music we see has lost its innocence).

So. What is your eta and what made it great?

Am I overlooking what the oo’s and 10’s enjoy?

Ah nostalgia, it's not what it used to be.

I was born in 1956, so grew up through the page 50s, 60s and early 70s. Life was very different then , very much quieter and things were less accessible. I see some similarities with how we're living currently. But better, more freedom etc? I don't think so, just different. On balance I'd rather have the benefits of life now than then

Yes you are a bit. I think that regardless of your generation, you'll look back wistfully on your youth as an almost idyllic, innocent time and sigh at the youths of today not understanding the simple pleasures you once did, all those decades ago. It's your defining era almost and that poignancy makes it bittersweet. I imagine when I'm old I'll be talking about how great the music was back in the day (Arctic Monkeys through to Freya Ridings; it's not all about fucking sluts) and how we were more creative blah blah.

I think that now we have a greater global community, more tolerance in my generation and more ability to explore/challenge widely upheld societal beliefs that are less than savoury. I think that's in part because of the ease in which we can talk to others and travel.

Personally, the 80’s was a seminal decade in many ways, a decade of firsts. First kiss, first girlfriend, first fuck, first job, first car, first house. I started the decade as a spotty 13 year old and ended it as an immature 23 year old who was a cocky git.

So I guess that the decade defined me, but I’ve grown as a person since.

Only on do fab I feel so young sometimes

I was born in the 90s but mostly grew up in the naughties and I have to say that it was great. Kids TV was that great balance between new stuff and stuff our parents grew up watching. And growing up in London, I think the era took away a lot of the best bits about previous generations’s childhoods with some of the dangers but no iPads so we still had to make a bit of our own fun

Music was also banging, I think you’re clumping the 00s with the 10s a bit too much there if I’m honest.

Having said that I also grew up with music from all of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s which was really good. -70s or 90s were the best for me

Thanks steve. As I say, i wasn’t suggesting there isn’t good music from either the 00’s or 10’s. There is plenty of it about and I listen to loads of great stuff

From the current period. But seemingly much less of it now has the same “innocence” as Whitney Houston ET al did back then.

It wasn’t meant to be a dig at any particular musical genre, I was just making a historical comparison I style/feel I guess.

Real love however is late 50s early 69s for Jazz, RnB, Soul, bleabeat and ska.

Mid 90’s for me it’s when I discovered music I love and started playing gigs and playing exciting venues in hope be a star ( that didn’t happen) but the journey and fun was amazing mini tours and played with few band who did make it.

Plus British music was awesome for once and grunge hit so it was perfect

90s is my time of growing up... I wouldnt idealise it but I grieve a non gadget type upbringing and constant contact with nature and freedom of roaming around my children wont have. Saying that it comes with its advantages of course. I had to bury my head in encyclopedic books whilst they have Google at their hands.. we were just talking about it another day when they were asking questions about world.

I think people connected more deeply in person.. I would be 14 and knocking on my friends houses to go for a walk and share things because sending selfies of pouty me on fb for likes wasnt an option still we can do all these things.. nobody took away the choice to stay connected in those old fashioned ways.. just that we 'evolve'.. or more like adjust to ever changing reality and opportunities which it presents.

Ps. 80s/90s discos were definitely best
