Attitude changes

As we get older, we notice the shifting difference in other generations attitudes. Maybe more liberal, or maybe less forgiving about things and sometimes we can feel a little at odds with them.

What changes have you you noticed between older and younger generations?

Up on them there hills

I think it is a memetics thing, don’t personally think it is linked to age.

If you’re in a higher memetic level than them, it will be, know that, done that.

If they are in a higher memetic level than you, you will not understand them and they are thinking, know that, done that.

Memetics is not a age thing, it is a complexity of thinking thing.

I personally love the memetic thinking of the next generation.

Some of it blows me away.

I'll put my hand up and admit I've never heard of memetics! Off to research.

The older me is just very tired of other people and the bullshit they come up with.

And I no longer care what others think.

I think attitudes have always been different between generations. I cared as much when I was young as I do now, just about different things.

The younger generation are more open to change and liberal in their outlook. Creed, colour, sexual persuasion etc seems to have less importance to them. A culture of acceptance generally.

I’m 26 so younger generation from my experience we tend to be more open, “liberal” as someone said, accepting of others views and opinions.

I find the older generation can be set in their ways & beliefs, often close minded, some can be very patronising. Also I find those who don’t agree with the way some of the younger generation live their lives tend to be very abusive as if it’s their life. Then you have the ones with wisdom in abundance.

This is just my experience.

I just wish I’d of been more liberal when I was younger.

I know that wasn’t your question but youth really was wasted on me.

So many wasted sexual opportunity’s because of my own ill advised attitude at the time.

Gullible is a word Floro used and it certainly applies to my younger self.

These are just my observations and obviously don't apply to all.

Older

- Believe more in loyalty to things like jobs, banks, companies, brands, etc

- Not always that keen on change

- More national pride

- Prefer paper to digital information

- Worry more about the economy

- Believe in a traditional family unit

Younger

- More politically liberal

- Consider environmental issues more important than previous generations

- More fluid approach to gender, sexuality and relationships

- Not as focused on marriage or having children

-Less likely to be planning financially for the future than previous generations

I'd agree with this.

As we age, our perceptions and attitudes can change as well, often moulded by life experiences and new acquisition of knowledge.

I was very liberal and left leaning in my early 20's and am now much more conservative and idealistic in general.

I think that’s quite accurate. Older people often have this issue with diversity , they say they are not against it but don’t want it forced on them. They don’t like it but will tolerate it . Younger people and people my generation that work globally, kind of thrive on diversity.

So far I've become no less liberal. My core values are unchanged. I'm more willing to defend myself than I used to be, not just others. My faith in humanity wanes but I'm dogged and have to keep chipping away to try to make things better.

I work in healthcare so I can't see me becoming more conservative. I work with people of all ages who mostly have similar views to me. I guess when you're confronted with life's injustices every day and witness first hand how money is often prioritised over people's lives it has an effect on your mindset. I suppose it also depends on the reasons behind your political views whether they're more or less likely to be swayed.

My dad was always told by his parents he would grow out of his left wing views. I wonder when that will happen as he's in his mid 50s now . He's more new Labour though so me and him still clash over politics.

I’ve found that people can be the same, whatever their generation. It depends, as it always has, on influences within your own life.

I’ve always been tolerant as my mum taught me to be. Her family were sadly homophobic and racist, she resisted and hated that attitude. My aunts and uncles of my granddads second marriage are the opposite to my mum.

I was the nerdy shy child, who my mum encouraged to flourish, she loves my individuality and is proud of me and how tolerant I am.

My daughter is very tolerant- she’s nine now, is accepting of disability (her older sister is autistic), doesn’t judge by appearance- actually she doesn’t judge at all, doesn’t look down on others for their social circumstances and is accepting of all sexualities and gender.

Her friend (also nine) is a lovely child, but less tolerant and accepting.

My mum is exactly like her granddaughter as she’s had to put up with me, haha, she is obviously the older generation and more open minded than many my age or younger.

When I was a nurse the older ladies were more accepting than many younger. They used to be fascinated by my tattoos (white uniforms when I trained and first qualified) adored the gay staff, and were fantastic when they were joined by ladies who were tv’s or ts. Some of the younger patients were less comfortable and many men (of all ages) were not accepting at all.

That’s my experience anyway x
