I had the privilege and slight amount of luck to race against him. He was well into retirement and still competitive in then his late seventies.

One of the great drivers.

Often said to be the greatest racing driver never to win the F1 championship. Up until his long illness that led to his death, he was still highly regarded amongst the racing fraternity and still had a big input.

A true legend. Never saw him race but his name WAS Formula 1 throughout my childhood.

Alway cam across as a nice guy too.

He left a brilliant legacy and will be remembered as probably the most famous British GP driver ever.

I loved his outspoken manner...

During some pre race F1 chat, he was sitting in the track side sudio with a couple of more recent drivers and the conversation turned to the benefits of recent safety changes to F1.

The 2 ex drivers were complimentary and couldn't praise the changes enough.

Sterling was last to be asked for his input and after a pause he said

"I dont agree with them it's all rubish, the drivers championship is meant to be dangerous and not namby pamby. In my day we had a pair of gloves and a leather hat..."

Legends never die, 529 races and 212 wins. No mean feat during the Fangio years.

I have a former life I keep a little bit private, Stirling was invited by another team as a one off drive, I appeared as a stand in as the normal driver had a wee shunt testing.

When his car ran ok, he was right on the pace. Not bad for never driving the car before, and not set up for him.
