Survival puzzle may bump though

OK so the apocalypse is on and you ve done a runner..you ve found yourself in a wood..you don't know where..but you ve heard ofrom sanctuary due north but how do you find north. You have basic supplies including watch and handsaw. In the wood there are some freshly, cleanly cut tree stumps and the wood is surrounded by long grassy fields. The night skies have been clear and the days sunny. How will you find north..oh since its a sexy site the sanctuary is a place of free pleasure..whatever your needs you ll find there..over to you.

Wait until sunrise or sunset. Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Boom you have north. Or if you’re a keen astrologer, you may use the stars. However I would use the sun.

Will put the many ways up later..the sun will give you direction of travel but how would you get true north from the sun..slightly more to it to fix the points?

Moss, not just but MOSTLY, grows on the north side if you're in the northern hemisphere, south if you're in the southern

Wait until it gets dark and then locate Ursa Minor in the sky. The brightest star in the constellation is Polaris, the North Pole Star.

Yup concerning moss ..it does tend to be northern side of trees but you have to be careful here as it s not necessarily a definately as it can depend on the trees location so in heavy shade areas such as old quarries etc it can't be a definately 100 per cent. So taking that into account think tree rings on cut stumps..this is more accurate than moss...any ideas.

The north star is found quite easy by running a straight line off the end two stars of the constellation known as the Plough or Ursa minor. This takes you in a straight line to north star which in actual fact is not the brightest star of the system..it only rates as a medium bright star. To confirm your north star off the Plough, look opposite of plough to find constellation cassioppea, easy to spot large W. Then run a line off the central star to intersect with the line off the Plough. Sounds hard but if you can recognise plough then look around and you ll find the big W. It's easy to navigate by and is more accurate than a compass...simples.

And use the stars(depending on the hemisphere)....other wise, use the pin on my belt buckle and create a pool of water with urine....put pin on a leaf.....compass

Haha haha sorry..love ya humour..OK tree stump..look at the rings, find where the rings are closest together and that will give you South..the wider rings are north. Hope you re not too cold and you got through the night..can I offer you a big morning hug to warm you up

trees navigate toward the sun so do plants so if when looking at the trees growth having moved around the tree and looked at it from different angles the heaviest growth will indicate south facing, in a dense wooded area that might not be so easy to spot because all the trees are fighting for the suns light but the sun rises in east and sets in west, if you can see the pole star that indicates north so they will give you accurate bearings day and night

Basically look at it and comb your fingers over it..the wind is predominantly south west in Southern UK so the grass will tend to grow away from the south west as will many trees etc if in an exposed location..this takes practise. The sun can be used easily..for instance at noon the sun will be directly South..you can also cut three sticks. Push a central stick in the ground, then mark the shadow..the central stick needs a bit of length (ha don't we all). Leave for over an hour and mark the stick again. This will give east west travel line..if you stand facing away from the stick..both feet on the shadows you will be facing north. You can use your watch. Point hour hand at sun, holding watch horizontally, then draw imaginary line between the 12 and the hour hand. North South line runs between the hour hand and imaginary line drawn to 12....simples.

Put a stick in the ground and put a pebble on the end of the shadow. 15 minutes later put another pebble on the end of the shadow again (the shadow will have moved round). Now if you stand parallel to the imaginary line between the pebbles you are facing north.

Yup..nice one..you can also take a piece of string, tie it to central pole and create a circle. That way you can lay down a permanent compass if you were to be staying in the one place for any length of time.
