How far out of date...

Will you eat things and what? Or past their use by at least?

I intentionally did a large shop so I don’t have to go out again for a while, but as a single guy living alone, I’m struggling to get through it and the freezer is full too.

I only want to know if you didn’t have to visit A&E

Depends what it is. I don't really look at the dates. I look at the food and smell it etc. If it looks and smells OK, then it gets eaten. Has been slightly more of a challenge recently due to Covid-19 smell loss, but it's been a fail safe solution thus far! Never given ourselves a gippy tummy anyway!

Dairy products are generally ok past their use by dates. You can smell if they are off. Beef and lamb is normally fine too a day or so after use by date. Chicken and pork normally smell rank even before their use by date so I'd use them first... same with fish. I eat loads of stuff that's out of date.

Not tested, but yes symptoms fitted. We both had it. Was mild, though very exhausting for the best part of a fortnight. Taste and smell still not back to normal and my neck still aches. S still has a bad cough.

Glad you’re on the mend and it wasn’t dreadful. Did you try eating weird stuff like spoonfuls of mustard just to see how bad it got? I saw a guy eating all sorts and was amazed by things like wasabi and mustard as the effects are nasal as much as anything.

I didn't deliberately test it, but couldn't taste Thai red curry, black coffee, chillis or anything else. Everything tasted exactly the same. You get the feeling of heat or spice on your tongue, but no flavour. It's definitely very weird indeed! We're OK now, just shaking off the after effects.

Not really. I don’t eat poultry a day past it’s use by, but I was just wondering what people’s thoughts were on other things. I’ve eaten bacon, yoghurts and a few other things quite well past and survived.

Seafood I’ll chance up to a day after the Use By Date; anything else I’ll just check whether it looks/smells/feels OK and if so, go with it.

Around 4 years ago we were in a scout building doing some work and one of the leaders were there but had no lunch he went into back room and got a army rashion box out in that were pasta and sauce,digestive biscuits, juice and chocolate he had the lot it were over 10 year out of date we didn't expect to see him the day after but he turned up and still going to this day

Meat and fish have been mentioned above.

Mold on things like bread and cheese are simply cut off and the rest eaten. I find that semi-skimmed milk is often fine for a week past the use by date.

The only things I am careful with are tomatoes and potatoes. If a tomato show’s any sign of mould then it’s binned. If potatoes start to go a bit green then I do use them but I ensure that the skins are cut off deeply until the remaining flesh is white.

Tins, providing they’re undamaged, last for years.

I'm like you OP. I share the kids with the ex but have to shop ahead not knowing exactly what nights I have them for tea each week. I'm always eating stuff out of date by a few days & not come to any farm yet. Only use by dates worry me a bit, best before means nowt. As others have said smell is key.

I've just shared a big tub of posh fruit yogurt with my son for afters, 3 days past date & it smelled & tasted fine.

The worst things are actually shop bought cakes. I've found even just a few days over date when you open them up they have furry mould on them which is tragic cos no one should ever waste cake!

I (Luke) don't really care about dates. They are just an indicator. If it hasn't gone mouldy and doesn't taste bad then I'll almost certainly eat it. I hate wasting food.

There's a bloke on Youtube who opens an old ration can of dried beef from the boer war, and eats it. Just to put that into perspective, this can was processed around 1898, and was 120 years old when he eats it.

I once accidentally ate bacon that was 10 days out of date and I ate the last two rashers three days after I opened it.....my gut was fine. Apparently I used to eat mud as a child so my stomach has been trained to cope with weird stuff.
