When someone asks you a question you don't want answer and you ask the asker their questions, they don't typically do so with good grace, or even treat it as you being hostile?

Is this an IQ test? If so, I've just failed.

Say someone asks you what you like in bed, what your story is or "tell me more about yourself".

You respond by telling them that question is too personal or too vague and that they should answer that question themselves.

They don't, and are instead weirded out or treat it as you being difficult or hostile.

Why does this happen?

This tends to happen with those who are of the CGA (Common Garden Arsehole) genus. Behavioural traits like you've described are inherent in CGAs and antisocial and unacceptable behaviour is to be expected. CGAs are best avoided.

Why does this happen?"

a) they want wank material

and/or b) if you tell them, they can pretend to like exactly the same thing, so you're meant to bang and absolutely must meet. It's fate!

“Tell me about yourself” is one of my most disliked questions.

Which is also behaviour common to CGAs and their close cousins, the Bonobos.

I don't much like it either, but I usually impress myself with the absolute bollocks I come up with as an answer.

Who's the CGA in this scenario - the one doing the asking, the one telling the one asking to answer their questions, both or neither?
