Don't Call Me Baby (or indeed any other pet term)

Almost every man who messages uses pet terms when messaging initially.

Does this bother you when it happens to you?

Have you ever told the other person not to call you whatever they did?

How did they react?

I myself have had a variety of responses

As a general rule, I hate all pet names, but I think that stems from having worked in a heavily male dominated industry where they were used in a deliberately condescending way.

If guys on here call me baby, princess, etc. I don't tend to call them out on it, but it is one of the things that goes in the "con" column when I'm deciding whether or not to meet them!

I get referred to as babe and hun all the time by women and it doesn't put me off as it's not normally addressed in a negative tone.

I don't use any of the terms pointed out in my conversations with women. I may use "lovely" every now and again, but that's it.

We find far more women use those terms than men.

And of is two, only Anna would use any of those terms and no one has ever taken offence.

Sometimes I get the impression that people try very hard to take offence on here, but only if it comes from a male.

I use huns, as a term of endearment. It is not to imply a level of intimacy, just being friendly. I think it comes from being brought up in Liverpool, everyone calls everyone luv, etc.

Oo err Devon

I dont particularlyike it from strangers.. But it doesn't offend me..

Its a part of some people's culture where they are from or family ways.. Like being called my duck.. Or lover..

So I don't look to far into it..

I don't assume everyone calling me babe wants a relationship with me..

Some certainly go too far with it.. Like sexy little sugarpuff... As you can tell.. I'm scared for life!

Plus if conversation starts that way.. You are not goi g to be compatible anyhow so delete and move on xx

This might sound a bit odd, but I’ve noticed over use of the word babe can sometimes be fake accounts where it’s meant pretending to be women. It’s happened a few times.

Pet names don't bother me. I don't have my real name on my profile so if someone wants to call me something cutesy instead, it's cool. I wouldn't appreciate a derogatory term from a stranger, but I get 'hun' or 'lovely/lovey' fairly often, which are fine. Clearly no offence intended, and none taken.

I don't have a problem with the perceived intimacy of a pet name either; after all, if we're going to be chatting, it's a precursor to potential sexytime, which is pretty intimate!

I grew up hearing love or darling, so when I moved here and it was babe that took a little getting used to, as I always thought that was more for people in love, now I know it’s even for the woman buying a loaf of bread from a cashier. It’s weird how words of familiarity and use of pet names differs from town to town, the different words takes some getting used to, but I never see the actual use of them as someone overstepping the mark as so used to it now xx

as long as there is a positive attitude I don’t really mind at all. Actually I like them when it come across friendly.

Before people get your name here they need to refer you in a way and creative ones get bonus points regarding that initial referral anyway

"Almost every man who messages uses pet terms when messaging initially.

Does this bother you when it happens to you?

Have you ever told the other person not to call you whatever they did?

How did they react?

I myself have had a variety of responses "

I absolutely hate the term Babe!!! I once remember a man had pulled into a parking space that I had waited for, so I stood out my car and just shouted, “I’ve been waiting what you playing at.” He responded with alright babe bla bla bla. I saw red and only heard the babe bit and nearly parked my car in his ass!!! So no I don’t like them!!!

Essex, near basildon

I am ok with it but if I am honest, I prefer it when I at least know someone and have at least chatted.

I'm not offended by being called love or hun or similar.

However, my profile seems to attract sub men, who tend to call me Miss or Madam, which is a bit odd.

I don't mind it... I just find it odd. Maybe because when I was at school, female teachers were always called Miss.

Well this certainly blew up! Such an interesting response, thhis clearly resonates with many of you.

I actually created a list of what people could call me on another online profile years ago. I should look at ad see if it's changed!

I actually like derogatory terms when I’m playing or having sex, but these are for lovers not strangers as their first message. Those terms are for when we are building trust between us.

However non derogatory terms such as duck, sweetheart (unfortunately one I use at times in my real life) hun or darling, no real issue. I actually don’t like mate or bud too male sounding.
