Bird Racism

Chelmsford

I have a few hanging bird feeders and enjoy watching the small garden birds feed on them and don't mind the pigeons and blackbirds on the lawn underneath hoovering up fallen seeds. I don't mind the squirrel having a feed but I chase off starlings. They eat everything in sight in minutes and the poor little ones get nothing. I think they are worse than wolves. Is this bird racism? Or speciesism?

Hefty Hideaway

In my area most gardens have well stocked feeders so the birds tend to tour the gardens. The starlings are a joy to watch and they don't seem to eat everything as they have great access to regular food.

We have frequent visits from bullfinches, goldfinches, robins, collared doves and the usual blackbirds, sparrows, starlings and pigeons. Absolutely beautiful.

It is lol you got to be kind to them all. You can buy special feeders that only the tiny birds can squeeze through to get to the food. They are all nesting now so more hungry. Xx

And we have stopped our discarding food source so they must rely on feeders, especially as the elderly are not out feeding as per normal

Maybe if you were to have a pressure switch under the perch on the feeder - attached to a taser so the larger greedy birds got tased and fell prey to next doors cat..., I may have been indoors too long!!!

I have a distinct dislike for magpies. They come up and down my hedgerows eating nesting birds and eggs. So I do my best to pop them from the window.

I get loads of crows in my garden, I've grown to love them, they're so bold and smart.

I don't mind crows or seagulls.. of course there is always some smartypants saying that seagulls do not exist..

If they don't exist then who steals your chips ..?

Starling numbers had been a cause for concern, so I'd not discourage feeding. They may be locally in abundance, which is a great way that they may be building their population numbers back up atm, where they can then distribute more widely.
