"they generate an income, so its not as if its a one way street. not only that but our royal family have more respect worldwide than our poloiticians, so maybe we should dissolve government and become a proper monarchy" Tho he income they generate is minimal, the old tourism argument is a lie only one Royal site is even in the top 20 british tourist attractions and that gets only 20% of its counterpart in republican France. And its hard to argue income generated elsewhere that wouldnt exist anyway.

"My children will be and are being taught something very different. That all people are born equal" We're not all born equal, more's the pity. I'm don't love or hate the Royal Family, although I have a soft spot for the more entertaining members. However, it's them or el Presidente, and I know which I'd prefer.

(now I know im in a minority of 1 here on this thread, and the wife will kill me for getting political, if it puts people off , but hey I say what i think sorry)

Not that he could have done it if he was severly disabled true but it was mostley the upbringing that made him. Anyway Greatness is a debatable point in itself, for example years ago Thatcher was both the most popular, and the most hated person in britain in different poles held at similar times, was she great, horrible both or neither?

"get rid of them , the french had a good idea when they got bored with the bunch of free laoders some refer to as royalty. If you want them vote for them and put on the form that you would support them out of your own pocket , not state funds . I think that their popularity would plumet somewhat if people had to dig into their wage packets to give their hard earned money to a bunch of fabulusly wealthy numpties " Make that a minority of 2 LOL anyway Ill leave this a for a while, doubtless when I get back everyone will have disagreed even more.

In this day and age, it is an embarrassment to have this lot parading around. The idea that represent us abroad is cringe worthy. How can a family that are so out of touch with the people in this country possibly represent us. As for the tired argument about the tourism they generate, the 2 most visited countries are the USA and France. both republics. Get shot of them. Sell their land and possessions and reinvest that in the economy and open the royal palaces to the tourists. everyone's a winner.

" open the royal palaces to the tourists. everyone's a winner." erm... they already are.. You know having met the Queen and other royals on different occasions I have to say that I found them lovely people. I am very proud to have our Monarchy... and will be celebrating the Jubilee in style and am happy that I get to see this event. I go to London often to see the trooping the colour etc.. and love it.. its always packed. Cali

I think you have a lower opinion of the masses than the Royal Family have. I am proud to have been brought up a Royalist, and my children are taught the same.. And the younger generation of Royals I think will be very good for our country. Cali

Its rare we agree on anything but on this I have truly been shocked to my core that people could openly speak in such a way. I even looked up what the laws are on treason now.. Cali

"It's all too easy to have a 'keep or get rid' argument but what will be the ramifications of dispensing with the monarchy, given the world as it is today and our place in it? Let's say we vote to get rid of the monarchy - that's the whole family, not just the monarch. They won't just gove up their palaces and move to a nice little semi in Reigate, and nor should they be expected to (remember, it would be against their human rights to make them live a life they are unaccustomed to and would not be able to function in). Where will they go? They'd have to move abroad somewhere, Europe perhaps, where they will become open season for anyone with a grudge against the UK or it's Allies. So you have to ask how you would feel if William & Kate, and their children when they have them, are blown to bits on a Paris street, or somewhere in Belgium, Germany, etc etc.. If you get rid of the monarchy you still have to pay to protect at least the the generations of them that are alive today. Personally, I find talk of getting rid of them (and doing dirty things to them) extremely distasteful and bordering on treasonous." it is treason and with govement looking at emails and web sites u think some would be more careful

" don't bother. you will find it weighs in their favour, so they can keep their ares on the throne and the money for nothing rolling in" actually most of those laws were abolished.. Hatred for people that are just doing a very public service amazes me.. and most have at one point served in the armed forces.. as its part of what they must do.. I for one will be very sad when the Queen steps down.... I love the pomp and circumstance and find it thoroughly British. I have American friends that envy me just for living here and having a Queen. As a child I lived on the outskirts of London and would often go to Windsor Castle or up to London to see the various ceremonies. I was also at the commonwealth centre as a girl guide and the Queen was there. I wonder if brownies are still made to swear a promise to serve their queen.. yup they are.. Although its different from mine.. but changed to accommodate different faiths not the monarchy. I promise that I will do my best, To love my God, To serve the Queen and my country, To help other people, And to keep the Brownie Guide Law. Cali

"Hatred for people that are just doing a very public service amazes me.. and most have at one point served in the armed forces.. as its part of what they must do.." Hatred borne of envy. I very much doubt anyone posting anti-royal comments would turn down a life of luxury were it offered to them.

"Sell their land and possessions and reinvest that in the economy and open the royal palaces to the tourists. everyone's a winner." The lands and properties owned by the royal family, have been accumulated by careful marriage, good business and occasionally bloody war and murder over many generations. BUT the point is they have worked as a family to accumulate over the long term, and therefore the wealth belongs to them not the greedy and avarice driven who only want to take it now for personal gain in a single lifetime, it’s this long term view that makes the aristocracy different and very valuable. Income from the royal estate goes to the government and far exceeds the money given back to them from the state, not tax as such, but the net effect is the same. So they don't actually cost the tax payer anything, in fact they as a family business are a net contributor. Are you seriously advocating that the government can strip all the assets owned by a family and sell them off for the governments gain? The same rule would of course apply to you and your relatives. And then what? President Cameron? Or Salmond? They have both shown great long term planning and consideration skills NOT!!! And would not of course be paid for by their own accumulated wealth but would charge everything to us as tax payers. I am a Royalist, I do believe that we are all born equal, but I also know that most are educated badly, live for personal gain and short term greed, and have no concept of the value of stability and history. I will stand silently for the national anthem, since the Scottish king united us as the United Kingdom we are one nation, and I am proud of our history, our ceremony and our contribution to the world as a whole, even those bits certain types say we should be ashamed of in hindsight…..

Funny you should mention Cameron hes a direct descendant of William 1V and might even be queen if William didnt marry a catholic in secret. Oh and income from the royal estate would be far greater if they paid the same inheritance tax and council tax that everyone else does, meanwhile they also get to arrange new deals such as Prince Charles off percentage of off shore tax. Its quite clear that as a republican (not the american or Irish sort)I am in a clear minority, so I chose not to continue this debate (tho I am glad I started it), as I can see it wont go anywhere,Ill either have to keep bringing up evidence (which i do have) to prove my arguments taking a rediculous amount of time or else accept that I am not in tune to the common opinion, I am rather saddened but there you go (hope I havent made too many enemies along the way, but id rather be hated for saying what i believe that liked for saying what i dont) "

"Sorry this is a bit political, but on another thread some people professed shock at disparrageing comments about the Queen, Can a person really be shocked that many dont want the royal family and feel they have a right to be negative given that we spend taxpayers money on them. So do you want to keep a monarchy? or do you feel that its time to change ? what are your thoughts, " Well, monarchy is good. It represents the culture but the royal family should not depend on public to maintain their royality, they should have their own income
