On the news this morning.....just heard a union rep say how cuts on the tube are unacceptable .....and the guy was going on about losing front line service people...he was worrying about customer service and welfare and how he wants the best for London's public...

How noble....gallant...I thank him...

Although I do not see much evidence of this " love " for the public whilst travelling on the underground....

Just a thought....

the changes are controversial, but i like the 24 hr idea and automated ticket buying was always going to happen.... Ruby x

24 hrs service wont happen because of engineering works and you have to completely change the working shifts ! And they haven't asked or consulted the unions !

I'm a trackman on the underground. We can only get on track to carry out maintenance between the last trains and the first trains.

They will never run 24hrs when would the maintenance take place?

That's why they close sections at weekends. If this was to be done during a normal working weekday then it would cause chaos and the city would loose millions. It would never happen.

I've nothing to do with the tube but from everything I've head from everyone who might know, it won't happen.

What we have is a very appealing, but unachievable promise, with a severe reduction in staff.

When it isn't delivered, the unions will be to blame and they've already got rid of the staff they wanted.

If it is somehow delivered, we get a lot more weekend closures on very prominent tube lines.

I think for the most part the tube is brilliant. It doesn't need to run 24 hours, there is simply not sufficient demand for it. As for the automated ticketing, it was always going to happen, technology is changing all businesses.

Can we ask -serious question- how do other 'major' cities manage it then? Like New York for example?? how can London call itself a global city if all the tourist have to be tucked up in bed by midnight or pay a small fourtne to get a taxi... OR with no knowledge of the city get robbed ambling about looking for said taxi???? "
new york metro have another tube line running along the side so they can switch over to the other one when they need to repair it and vicea versa ! But the tube here only has one section so you have to close it down to repair it !

My personal whinge is that after years and years of "upgrades" to the Northern Line, they still haven't finished the improvements. And the bloody thing still breaks down regularly on the parts that have been upgraded.

The most stressful part of my day is the commute to work - and the city suffers because as a result I'm unwilling to ride in at the weekend to have dinner, visit museums etc. And that assumes it isn't a weekend when the line is closed for "upgrades".
