"Until there is an effective vaccine which is widely available, or sufficient numbers of people have recovered from the virus and a walking around without the risk of catching and/or spreading it, its to be expected that clusters will continue to break out, especially if and when people get back to the level of travel that has become the norm in the developer world. How severe such breakouts may be will depend on how quickly they are detected and contained. " Clusters break out, surely that leaves us where we are today, this started with one person in China after all. I can’t see this lockdown ending anytime 2020 unfortunately

"Hopefully herd immunity will kick in sooner rather than later. " Heard immunity at the expense of anyone over 70 that’s a ridiculous thing to wish for

"Hopefully herd immunity will kick in sooner rather than later. " Social distancing reduces the spread of infection, so herd immunity will be delayed. The numbers of infected people are likely to spike again any time the measures are relaxed. It's estimated about 60% of the population would be required to have caught and recovered from coronavirus to establish any level of herd immunity, it's most likely that we will be going in and out of periods of restriction until a vaccine is developed and made widely available

"Hopefully herd immunity will kick in sooner rather than later. " Herd immunity will only kick in when there's a vaccine and the majority of people have received it. That's years away yet.

"An effective vaccine will be the only way to stop this...The WHO and the big pharmas are pouring a ton of money and time into finding one so I think there'll be one by late summer. The issue then becomes how fast can they get it made, distributed and administered. Think the self isolation only has a defined life span too though. At some point people will want to get out and seek a normal life again...the hope would be the vaccine comes before that." 12-18 months is regarded as optimistic in terms of new vaccines

"Besides this, there is conflicting evidence as to whether or not the disease can re-infect someone who has recovered. " I suspect its just too soon to have a definitive answer on this Suggestions from some of that the immunity may only be a temporary thing but it's just too soon to say.

Testing on humans can't be sped up though, or at least it can't be sped up without serious risk.

The number of countries has no bearing on the speed a vaccine will be created. They can't rush through testing just because it's a pandemic. Trials and testing still need to be done before they even consider mass production. I personally won't be rushing down to take the first batch of any vaccine they produce. Even with all the testing there can be any number of unknown side effects that could crop up from something so new
