Leaving out the political digs or anything I felt he spoke very well and showed leadership.His reference to Churchill was notable and the calm before the storm was a message in itself. Today of all days we needed abit of leadership. I expect another emergency broadcast before the end of this week whereby we will be locking down. Worryig times.

I think he was trying to find a balance between scaring the shit out of people and asking us all to be reasonable and responsible. I agree, there will be further measures but I do believe we are in capable hands.

In fairness he spoke very well, it is true there will be a "surge" as he said and our actions as a nation is to minimise it"flatten the curve", there will be more asked of us as a nation to protect our most vunerable and political parties aside we think both Leo and Simon Harris are doing a monumental job in trying to safeguard our people, god bless all health care staff they have a mountain to climb in the next few weeks but we can support them by social distancing and general common sense.

He was his usual clinical self without real empathy for the people affected by this. It was written for him but it looks like he didn’t read it much first. It was designed to clear some panic and hopefully it’ll work.

We all need to pull together and engage common sense. Today saw little mini parades spring up out of communities. Social distancing does and will work effectively. That type of local action is vital for the morale of people.

Heed the medical advice and go about it in the prescribed way. Don’t call an ambulance for flu symptoms, call the Covid-19 helpline, call your gp. Wait for the test with paracetamol and lots of fluids.

Let’s not be stupid about this. Yes parties are going to be affected, businesses will fail and people will suffer but if we can all work together the damage will be less and the recovery will be faster.

See you all on the other side, Fire.

Essential services would remain.So think chemists,food shops,financial institutions, freight for food supplies and farm supplies...but any other shops will be closed and lockdown means you don't go outside unless you have a valid reason to do so.Thats my understanding anyhow.

The reality anyway is that many businesses will quickly run out of cash, people will not have money for non-essentials

He came out, referenced Churchill which no Irish leader should ever do. He gave no further information, he gave his family a big pat on the back for being health workers, very nepotistic of him. He complained about the "me me me" mentality of Ireland despite feeding it over his tenure as leader. He gave no new security to people or no new information.

I'm no fan of FG at all and was delighted they got trounced at the election, but I'm much happier to be here than in the UK at the moment.

They seem to be living in an alternate reality to the rest of Europe on what's coming.

Yeah well from the bottom of my heart we can and will get through this it's not going to be an easy ride(no pun intended) but together it will make it that much easier before the night is out or if I forget lol I like to say happy St Patricks day to you all and hope you stay safe and well my heart goes out to all your loved ones and hope they pull through this so I ask you all to raise your glasses or whatever you have in your hands and say to yourselves we can beat this x sorry if I'm sounding like a soppy git lol

I presume when the swabs arrive we will see a huge spike in numbers

We will be a better place than our friends in the UK

I would not like to be at the coal face of making decisions on our country's health

Hopefully when we have to go to lock down it won't come as a shock to anyone they have been told it's coming tonight in a softley way

Those of us who are so quick to judge should ask what would we do in the morning if we had to

And it has to consider the whole country not just what we personally think

Our health Care staff and officials are just like us they have families to

Look at what going on in the UK where the population is so much bigger than Ireland and they are not on same page as anyone else

The guidelines issued have been much stronger leading to alot more people working from home + staying in.

The messaging and tone is as important as the policies at times

From the political leader of Ireland on St Patrick's day, I thought it a very good, level, calming, factual speech.

We had the kids in bed before it but wished we had let them watch it. Factual, to the point, remorseful about Paddy's day, considered how we weren't the only country experiencing problems, hope for those in need during it.

What more do ye want?

Yes, a lockdown speech may not be far behind but isn't that sensible?

Tell you what. Rather than slag him off, write what you think he should have said and put your money where your mouth is, as they say.

For me, Ireland on Patrick's Day, in an extremely unusual time, was well represented by Leo

Well despite leo mentioning things that we already know there is very little new to add except for the growing cases of the virus and the possibility of a vaccine when it arrives weather what he said was scripted or not or weather you belive in his politics the main thing to take from his message is to listen to the advice given to help battle against this and to keep each other safe and together we will get through this however long it takes I for one will do what it takes to help anyone else that feels the same way feel free to join the fight if you haven't done so already

90% of people tested are negative. To find 15,000 people in the next two weeks (like leo said), that means it will be 10% of people tested.

That means in the next two weeks, we are going to test 150,000 people.

Sure, with 30,000 kits ordered.

People need to wind their necks in and stop saying leo did a good job. He stood up infront of everyone and lied, quoted churchill and tried to scare the shit out of us that we, the people, are going to be paying for this forever.

30 fucking euro to phone your doctor to get referred to get a test? 30 fucking euro of tax payer money to these "heroes".

On TV they were saying testing only good if you have symptoms if you have none it tells you nothing.

The truth is, we need Mass testing combined with social distancing or its pointless. We need 200,000 people tested in 2 weeks. We need to skip the fucking doctors at 30 euro a head, and pay nurses per shift to do the swabs, and need to pay as little as possible per test.

We have a small population, we have big money, we need to just do the tests, find everyone who has it, cut this out, and get back to work.

We need to just test everyone as often as possible, for 2 weeks, then job done.

I have never been a fan of this Taoiseach or government but I am very impressed by how they have stepped up to the plate on this. His address to the Nation was useful and needed, letting us know in no uncertain terms the greatest challenge to our endurance, mental strength and abilities which we will face in our lifetime is ahead of us. We will be living with this catastrophe for months. We'll have to prioritise and micro manage every aspect of our lives, finances and movements and life will never be as it was again afterwards. That's the reality that his speech has helped dawn upon us.

We could bitch and condemn what this government is doing and going to do or we can adhere to what the advise of the global experts are conveying to us through them and pull together and do our best not only for ourselves and our families but for everyone in our society. There will be plenty time to hypothesize about conspiracy theories when those of us who survive this get back to the freedoms and liberties we took for granted just two weeks ago.

Surely our energies and smarts will be better utilized in observing all the advise, observing responsible social distancing and helping the vulnerable and those in front line services at this time, than second guessing those in the know who are trying their best to guide us through this nightmare with as few unnecessary deaths as possible.

Numbers of people confirmed with the virus are only comparable if every country is testing the same proportion of people. Many more remote countries and countries with even less accessible health services than our own, will have plenty of people who have the virus but never get tested. It's still very early to be saying who got it right. It's certainly easy to say who got it drastically wrong and Italy seems to fall squarely into that category at the moment although they have the oldest average population in the EU so they were always likely to have the highest proportion of deaths compared to cases.

You tell me this is unworkable as we would need retesting and social isolation for testing everyone to work.... Well yeah thats why I said it.

China has been clear on this for over a week. You need to, NEED TO test everyone you can, isolate everyone you can, give flu drugs that shorten the stay in hospital to everyone you can. China has also listed safe, already available medication that works good at shortening stays in hospital.

Now you can tell me that Ireland can not do these things, but you can not say these solutions are not out there for leo to point at.

What costs more, shutting your country down into 2 people in a shop at a time for 4 months, or just doing what china/south korea did, mass testing, mass isolation, shorten length of outbreak, no new cases.

Meanwhile Leo is on tv saying it cant be beaten, it is here for good, 15 thousand will get it in 2 weeks and it will be a financial burden for a generation at least.

Over in china 0 new cases.

"Testing "everyone" is something of a pipe dream. I'm not sure very many countries have that capability. It also only means that you're virus free on that day so unless people are put into isolation after being given a negative test result then there's no guarantee they won't pick it up the next day.

Numbers of people confirmed with the virus are only comparable if every country is testing the same proportion of people. Many more remote countries and countries with even less accessible health services than our own, will have plenty of people who have the virus but never get tested. It's still very early to be saying who got it right. I said its too early to know for sure who got it perfectly right. If we have no more deaths from now on we'd be the world's poster boy for fighting it.

Mass testing... We don't yet have the capacity for that so there's not much point in saying we're going to do it. You appear not to understand that point.

China had 34 new cases and 8 new deaths yesterday.

Given the three population of China and the fear that its prevalent, there's also a fair possibility that the actual numbers are far greater than the known numbers.
