"Will total Lockdown mean no one can leave their homes not even for work? " Depends on the lockdown..... Italy is total no work other than essential services France you can go to work for food or for medical services

"Will total Lockdown mean no one can leave their homes not even for work? " Not really as certain services etc will still need to operate. Bit the likes of Penney's or the like don't need to be open.

"Essential services would remain. So think chemists, food shops, financial institutions, freight for food supplies and farm supplies...but any other shops will be closed and lockdown means you don't go outside unless you have a valid reason to do so.Thats my understanding anyhow." The reality anyway is that many businesses will quickly run out of cash, people will not have money for non-essentials

"Thought he spoke very well. But have to say sitting listening to it on the radio ( don't have mainstream tv channels) was the most surreal freakiest and s sry feeling." Sometimes a radio gets to you more than lookingvat something live on the telly you're right there Bo I left Cork to drive to Dublin just as the first plane hit the twin towers and can still vividly remember the radio on the drive home

"Poor, over dramatic, fear inducing. People were actually running into shops and telling people "Leo is going to shut the country". He came out, referenced Churchill which no Irish leader should ever do. He gave no further information, he gave his family a big pat on the back for being health workers, very nepotistic of him. He complained about the "me me me" mentality of Ireland despite feeding it over his tenure as leader. He gave no new security to people or no new information." You hit the nail square on the head there.

"Found it fairly boaring and repetitive. No new information was delivered. It started off like a campaign speach. I thought paid political ads had to be stated up front? What a clown! " It's not about information, it's about managing the public perception so civil disorder doesn't break out.

"How much more have we done here than the UK really and they are getting slated for their approach. Granted we closed schools last week and advised pubs to close. Other than that is there any real difference?? " The guidelines issued have been much stronger leading to alot more people working from home + staying in. The messaging and tone is as important as the policies at times

"I thought he spoke well but "The calm before the storm " was not needed though, it's a flu like virus not the end of the world !. The government paying 30 euro to the GPs for every phone call they take is completely nuts." Exactly, I don't remember the part where Batman collects 30 dollars every time the bat sign is turned on.

"Ye can bitch all ye like It's going to cost I would rather have a bill Than see loads of deaths" Fair enough, but then don't call them heroes, they are business people/workers getting paid good money in that instance. Also we will see the deaths and pay the money, because our strategy does not follow the WHO recommendations, South Koreas, or Chinas.

"Plenty of online dicks doing the "Sinn Fein would do a better job" line.... But look at Britain and USA they're all over the place. We seem solid and confident we know what we're doing. We're not....but it appears we are, and at this time we need that" I don't think anyone would do a better or worse job in a situation like this as nobody can point to experience and say exactly what will work.

"I don't think anyone would do a better or worse job in a situation like this as nobody can point to experience and say exactly what will work. " We can point to Japan/China/South Korea. Mass testing of everyone so that they can detect stealth and other spreaders. Retesting again and again. Social isolation, downing of planes, no more incoming people for 2 weeks. Using the japanese flu drug that helps people get over corona in 4 days instead of 7-11 days.

When Leo was making his speech he couldn't point to the Japanese flu drug as I'm sure he didn't know about it before yesterday either. Testing "everyone" is something of a pipe dream. I'm not sure very many countries have that capability. It also only means that you're virus free on that day so unless people are put into isolation after being given a negative test result then there's no guarantee they won't pick it up the next day. Numbers of people confirmed with the virus are only comparable if every country is testing the same proportion of people. Many more remote countries and countries with even less accessible health services than our own, will have plenty of people who have the virus but never get tested. It's still very early to be saying who got it right. It's certainly easy to say who got it drastically wrong and Italy seems to fall squarely into that category at the moment although they have the oldest average population in the EU so they were always likely to have the highest proportion of deaths compared to cases.

" You said there was no one for leo to point to for guidance. I said there was and pointed to them. I said testing, retesting, social isolation all in tandem. You tell me this is unworkable as we would need retesting and social isolation for testing everyone to work.... Well yeah thats why I said it. China has been clear on this for over a week. You need to, NEED TO test everyone you can, isolate everyone you can, give flu drugs that shorten the stay in hospital to everyone you can. China has also listed safe, already available medication that works good at shortening stays in hospital. Now you can tell me that Ireland can not do these things, but you can not say these solutions are not out there for leo to point at. What costs more, shutting your country down into 2 people in a shop at a time for 4 months, or just doing what china/south korea did, mass testing, mass isolation, shorten length of outbreak, no new cases. Meanwhile Leo is on tv saying it cant be beaten, it is here for good, 15 thousand will get it in 2 weeks and it will be a financial burden for a generation at least. Over in china 0 new cases.

I said its too early to know for sure who got it perfectly right. If we have no more deaths from now on we'd be the world's poster boy for fighting it. Mass testing... We don't yet have the capacity for that so there's not much point in saying we're going to do it. You appear not to understand that point. China had 34 new cases and 8 new deaths yesterday. Given the three population of China and the fear that its prevalent, there's also a fair possibility that the actual numbers are far greater than the known numbers.
