"A large volume of rumours had circulated on WhatsApp and social media today suggesting that an announcement was imminent about all schools nationwide to be closed for a period of weeks.

In a statement released this afternoon, the Department of Education said it was liaising closely with the Department of Health but that schools were not being closed.

The Department is believed to have made the statement this afternoon in response to the large amount of misinformation being spread on social media and WhatsApp today"

It doesnt mean closures are imminant.

Saying that my gut feeling is that its only a matter of time.

have to agree, you can see the blasé attitude that many people have towards it, they don't seem to understand the implications of allowing it to run riot among the population. Yes, 80% of people will only get mild symptoms, however 20% will be serious or critical, and that's a hell of a lot of people.

I'm definitely guilty of this. Up until yesterday I wasn't taking it seriously at all but now I'm really starting to wonder. I guess when so much is sensationalised in the media its hard to take anything seriously but now I'm starting to seriously second guess my attitude towards it all.

Exactly. Only 300 ICU beds in the country and it could come to only being able offer palliative care depending on circumstances of patients. Doctors may have to 'choose' who to save.

As someone who is very close to a very high risk person, this terrifies me.

Spare a thought for the thousands of carers who earn a living caring for the elderly and people with disabilities. They depend solely on HSE funded staff. They can't work from home.

Army definitely can help if things escalate

the more quickly the disease is allowed to become rampant, the more likely it is that there will be a high number of seriously ill people, and the less likely the health service will be in any way able to cope - we already have a considerable number of health professionals who have been exposed and told to stay at home.

Just because I'm calling bullshit on the internet rumours doesnt mean I dont think it's anything to worry about at all. The vulnerable people in our society are certsinly at risk. That doesnt mean I have to put on a tinfoil face mask and freak out at every randomer who claims to have secret preknowledge of national school closures which will be announced tomorrow. At least we wont have to wait long to see .

I think the country should just shut down like italy have now. Rather that than wait until hundreds of people have died and then eventually shut country down anyway.also wouldnt mind not working for few weeks. The only thing is with everything people dont want to lose money. People will carry on working as sick pay wont cover. If schools close who looks after the kids ? Parents who have to take time of work. So best if the country just gives us all a 2 week holiday

They are balancing the risk of public harm from infection vs the damage to the economy/jobs/education etc that would be caused by taking more extreme protective measures. It's a fine line to walk. Overreacting could be a disaster for the country too.

10 more positive cases in the south today. 14 in the north so far. Every single so called rumour/ bit of scaremongering I have heard, have all come to be genuine. Today there was a report about 10 people that need to self isolate after a blind boy boat club podcast gig. Its was only rumour last week and was shot down by so many. Today its fact.

They should go ahead and try stop the spread of infection. I'd say it will happen for sure

100%. They even made a school reopen recently who closed up themselves. If a decision is made it will be made centrally and for sound scientific reasoning.

Well if the schools are to be closed from the weekend then I would imagine that his prediction of an announcement tomorrow would be very likely. We will soon find out if all the secret meetings and texts are true anyway... and if the department were wrong with their announcement today, and the whatsapp groups and facebook rumours are instead correct.

Ah look , it just that the general consensus seems to be ,that people are unhappy with the holding back/slow nature of sharing information. Also the time it takes to decision make. The lack of government could be an attributing to all this.

Hope the country doesn't get shut down , ie schools closing ect...

The government are meeting daily and taking advice from our best medical minds about the best way to approach the outbreak. They arent delaying.. they are choosing the appropriate reaction as the situation evolves. The man in the street doesnt understand the nuances and doesnt have all the information.

Misinformation is rife. This thread is a prime example.

You are referring to a government. What government?

There is a covid19 cabinet that are meeting. The stand in taoiseach and tainiste are involved.

I can speak of my area only. Clare is a small enough place. As i said rumours/ scaremongering I heard all became true. I had info last thursday that was only published today.

I think you are agreeing with me. There is no school shutdown planned from friday, and due to be announced imminently. That's what I've been saying all along and is the point of the whole thread.

There IS a government. Until it is superseded by a new one the existing government will continue. That's what's enshrined in irish law.

You have educated me there in regards the government. I am agreeing that it won't happen this week. In the weeks ahead i wont be surprised. Pretty sure strategies are being talked about. We will soon be in the Delay Phase of this outbreak. It is being planned for and i can envisage the implementation.

From the cork echo today in case some people are STILL not convinced this is nonsense...

"No plans to close schools to halt coronavirus

The Department of Education and Skills has said there are currently no plans to close schools, quashing rumors widely circulating on social media today.

Social media was awash with suggestions that schools would close from Friday until the end of the Easter holidays, however, this is not the case.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education and Skills told The Echo that any decision to close schools will be on public health advice, but there is no such advice at this stage.

They say that proportionate responses are necessary in relation to Covid-19, and are based on specific public health advice.

“No other response is appropriate,” the spokesperson said.

“Public health professionals will contact schools if there is any action to be taken. Schools should not take unilateral action.” The spokesperson goes on to say that all schools have been provided with advice and guidance in respect of the Coronavirus."

I don't know much about the medical aspect of it but should we not be shutting down travel to seriously affected areas and try to keep it out of our country like what happened with foot and mouth Back few yrs ago all animal movement was stopped

Japan seems to have contained it and they are close to China by shutting everything down for few weeks

Seems crazy the health services are crumbling before this

If you are a nurse or hospital worker it must be very frightening

The only missinformation is coming from the government themselves.

They said it was fine to travel to italy, even after people were returning from italy with corona they allowed schools to keep visiting. Told us it was nothing to worry about.

Look at italy now.

We are only a small island and you can only get onto the isaland a few ways, and look at us, cause some dirty fucking bastards didnt wash their hands in italy.

At a meeting in one of our children's schools last night (in the north) they said they were preparing for the eventuality of closure by setting up online classrooms across all subjects. They said however the decision to close could and would only be taken if that was the UK government directive.

So yes, wisely, preparations being made in case it happens but no closure imminent.

Japan has closed schools since the end of February. It has clearly slowed down the spread of the virus.

Going by the growth rate of Corona cases most European countries are not far behind Italy (approx 10 to 14 days and they're at the same point) unless drastic measures are adopted. Eurpean leaders only waking up now.

Death rate is what 6%?

Italy had 155 deaths in 24 hours, with only a few thousand infected. They can have a million road users and have less than 50 deaths in a year, less than 1 a day.

Should we panic? no. You probably need one extra loo roll thats all. Should you panic buy hand wash? no you should have some already, maybe one bottle extra. Should buy hand gel? maybe one bottle.

Hand wash, and hand gel only work if everyone is doing it. It's important those with immune issues can get the hand gel, the healthy among us can stop touching our faces, and wash our hands in the sink.

Its going to spread the virus more. People who need to buy hand gel because they have parents with compromised immune system have to visit more and more public areas to find it. Expose themselves to greater and great risks.

Why? so some dick can buy 5 for himself, so the people who campaigned for no plastic straws, no plastic bags, can buy 50 single use plastic items now its their health on the line.

the good news is, it wont kill your kids, but your kids will give it to you or kill their grandparents.

I don't know what way people are raising their kids, but they are playing games in the yard where they chase each other, cough on each other and then shout out corona and run from the person. Then that kid chases someone, catches them, shouts out cornona and runs.

I am pro life so i think state and companies should help people who have kids.

However Ireland is pro choice, and in pro choice countries it is made perfectly clear, you chose to have kids, any impact that has on your working life is your own to deal with, and if you dont want it to impact your life then chose not to have them and chose to work instead like women in other countries where they leave it to later in life etc and then only have one.

I thus think it is not appropriate for people with kids to attempt to get more time off work vs single women with no kids. If they can not do the job they should step aside for the woman who chose not to have them to take the position.

Like most pro life people you seem not to care for the kids once they're born

Please don't start some sort of battle between working parents or non parents as they have enought shite to put up with as it is

My wife is a teacher and she was told today that the school will probably close from monday

I'm an employer and already gave my employees Monday off as a paid holiday kids or no kids.

If the women or men who work for me need to take a few weeks off work or do half days or a shorter week to sort out childcare they will get paid in full.

I hope thay make up the time either working from home or evenings in the office to help the company keep going and contracts ticking over but they have been with me a long time so they know whats best for all of us.

Btw, on something of a side note from this particular thread. The Irish Times are reporting that the first fatalaty occurred from the virus in the east today.

As for the nonsense about decisions being made etc, it's pretty much irrelevant as things will change from day to day if and when the frequency of infection occurs.

Have u forgotten about all the kids who have low immune systems already and find it difficult to fight off normal illness and majority of times those normal cold and flu can end up being life threatening to those kids.

Nobody knows, but we will develop natural immunity and there will be vaccines available very soon, they have already tested drugs on infected patients

The numbers at the moment can't give accurate statistics for levels of seriousness or deaths as the numbers infected are so small and the demographic isn't representative.

The media feed on sensationalism and we can only hope it's all a huge hype

So there’s lots of people from the health service telling everyone that washing your hands is the best way to defeat Covid-19, but lots of people (most?) seem to think that this is a bit silly. Like how the fook can washing your hands be SO important, and how can it defeat a virus that’s causing so much havoc worldwide?? Well here’s the science bit, because I’m a nerd who likes to know “why” something happens.

The outer wall of a virus is made of lipids, they’re kinda like oils or fats, that’s a simple way of putting it. It’s called a lipid layer. Behind the lipid layer is the virus, it’s made up of proteins and RNA, which is kinda like DNA and it’s what lets the virus replicate. That’s really it, it’s that simple (unless you have a PhD and there’s a few on here with them, but this is for the rest of us who are a bit thick!). ??

So, what about the washing of hands with soap?? Here’s the part that nobody is being told, but it’s important (it’s especially important if your a nerd ??). Soap is made up of loads and loads of lipids, it what makes soap feel so soft and smooth....?? When you wash your hands really well you get all these lipids on your hands. So if you have Covid-19 on your hands the lipids in the virus wall start to break down, because the lipids in the virus lipid layer are soluble in the lipids in your soap on your hands.

So when you break down the lipid layer you end up destroying the proteins and the RNA. It’s kinda like years ago when your Da used to clean a paintbrush with turpentine, it’s because the paint was soluble in turpentine.....it’s really that simple. Also, people are searching high and low for antibacterial soap....don’t bother. This is a virus, not a bacteria. Also, antibacterial soap is really just expensive soap. I’ve attached a pic of a virus, it’s a flu one but it doesn’t really matter. Break down the lipid layer with lipids in soap and you’ll kill the virus. You’re welcome. Feel free to share.

“If everybody's using antibacterial soaps, you're going to actually encourage drug-resistant bacteria to develop,” he said. “Any soap and water is good.”

“If you're walking around with wet hands,” McGee said, “that's a better culture medium for infection.”

My friends and neighbours said their offices will be closed tomorrow or Friday for a deep clean.

Ive spoken with school principal and they were talking about the plans "what if" and the schools might be closed for 48hrs for a deep clean as a prevention. There is no official information yet and definitely if there will be a sick child with positive test, the school will be closed for another few days for a deep clean and people who have been in close contact with the infected child have to stay at home for 14days.

This is what I know.

Do not allow your sick child with chest infection or running nose to go to school.

It might be just a flu like many cases or corvid-19.

And justified assumptions. There are 4 cases of it in Gloucestershire including a death. Unless the quarter of a million people that are there at the races alone. Packed into grandstands for days on end all swim home

The blase attitude of some people towards this is mind boggling. Whole countries being put on lock down. Flights and travel between countries being cancelled. Schools and businesses closing and people still acting like it's all being blown out of proportion and it's all media hype. I dont even think we know the half out it. In recent years there has been some nasty viruses like SARS and especially Ebola but can anybody ever say they witnessed anything like this in our lifetime?? But yea I guess the whole world is totally overreacting.
