It will cut down the risk but there will still be thousands congregating in pubs

If they cancel the day does that mean we go straight from Monday into Wednesday?

Either way it's still a 4 day working week.

Although if the day is cancelled then workers will only get paid for 4 days as Tuesday never actually happened.

Also, if the day is cancelled does this mean that the clocks will go forward a day earlier than anticipated or will the 29th of February be used as a replacement day for the cancelled one???

More importantly, are all calendars still valid???

I'm sorry but this is a complete joke, cancelling outdoor parades will not make a significant difference.

Sure we all know the pubs are jammed packed on Paddy's day. Inside a cramped packed pub, now that's one hell of a high risk situation for picking up a dose compared to being out in the open air. Are the pubs gonna close on Paddy's day? I think not

Just my opinion...

Surly ye don't think that all those people will now just go to the pub instead? Of course it will cut down on the amount of close contact people will have with each other in large groups.

I don't care either way. But the notion that everyone will just go to the pub instead is wrong.

From what I can tell its about infastructure...

They cant guarentee they can have the recommended santising facilities in place.

Not everyone that would go to the parade with kids etc.. will go to the pub and the ones that do will not all be in the same pub.

Plus the pub isnt a public event and cant jusy be cancelled by local authorities

They will go to the pub anyway!

Thousands of people pissed for hours, handwashing becomes a non event, and it becomes a paradise for a virus to spread. Regardless, this thing will spread anyway and no better than us Irish to get that job done!

This is correct decision.sadly other decisions are not made yet our government is to slow.we as citizens have responsibility for our own health and that of our vulnerable friends and family.how we react now determined how many die.so how many is enough to start to treat this seriously.parades cancelled is only the start of measures needed to protect our nation which includes our parents our health workers our sick our vunerable.

So we all have the information on how to try protect ourselves.do you want to be the 1 who didnt bother and being it home to your vulnerable nearest and dearest.your actions and decisions determine the outcomes of this virus. 3% is the reported mortality rate so far.this is under reported. Educate yourself check what's happening in Italy 2night check what ordinary people are insuring. Can we cope with same.IDont think so.

Be wise and be cautious.protect yourself and those around you.

If it's such a joke why are other big events all over Europe cancelled for the same reason? Surely someone has thought that one through. Keep in mind that people have to travel to and back to/from those events and the bigger the crowd the bigger the risk of a spread, the open air won't protect you from it.

I agree with everything you say DH. I suppose I was poking at the fact that nobody said anything about staying out of the crowded pubs where I believe risk of infection could possibly be higher. No GAA games cancelled either, pubs filled before and after games

This sums is up for me too..Having lost a close friend in the swine flu epidemic..She was 33 years old..I have been following the laughing and joking online with a tinge of sadness that unless these virus actually affect you or a loved one personally, it is deemed funny or perhaps a tad inconvenient..

Essentially the pub is the central to all things social in Ireland and no govt will tell people to stay away and are reluctant to dictate to the GAA too.....at the end of the day it comes down to votes

I've no issue with pubs btw

Yes I agree there's a hypocrisy to it with the drinking still going ahead. My best guess is though that the pubs won't be as packed out as they were in past.

Although the GAA has super powers and power connections, they will face 'ghost' games (no audience) sooner or later.

All of these cancellations and shut downs is to slow down the ammount of people getting it at same time...

So Paddy you go to the pub,

(don't drink the Corona butt)

Ted you go to mass,

(say a prayer for Paddy & Mary)

Mary bring the kids to play centre.. The parades are off..

N yee can let us all know what it's like when yee catch it..
