As it is now Christmas, who here would consider themselves a good practicing Christian

Which denomination? In a mainly R.C. country?

Most would be lapse Catholics? Or have I made a wrong guesstimation?

Who would be atheist or agnostic but shy/fearful/lazy to admit it or change it.

any Christian denomination, personality I would lean towards an agnostic way of thinking, and with respect I think that atheism and Christianity are just opposite sides of the same coin

What does it take for people to change their status though?

There's a shite stigma still in Ireland. Atheist or agnostic kids? Dam them for not making communion/confirmation.

Feck, I may have started a fire...

Hmm, am I atheist or anti-theist

Each to their own. Just don't ram it down my throat. Religion that is

Religion is mostly harmful. Catholicism is one of the more harmful

I don't have any religious beliefs, I respect the right of others to believe so long as they're not insisting I or anyone else does. My kids have attended schools with a Catholic ethos, quite simply because that was the only option where we live, it irks me that these are state schools, there should be no religious affiliation in a state school in my opinion.

I try to be a decent human being within my own definition of such, and give due regard to the rights and feelings of others, but all these things are subjective.

I have zero religious beliefs.

I used to be quite anti-religion too but I have come to realise that assholes will use any means they can to abuse power and sway others not just religion.

As a general concept it is a good thing, treat others kindly etc..... I just dont need it to hopefully have a half decent moral compass.

The issue is that religion endows people with power over a community. If that person happens to be a shitty person, then they are free to commit horrible crimes. If the leadership above that person are also shitty people then they cover it up, and claim that the law of the land doesnt apply to them. Disgusting.

I think that's because swingers are a little more enlightened than the general public so tend to be ahead of the curve on social issues.

Yes, so in that respect its no different to any other form of power.

I think swingers tend to think they are more enlightened, but most are as entrenched as anyone else in their own version of morality

Not really. A priest is unelected, and doesnt have a specified term to serve. Politicians can be easy enouhh gotton ridden off. Religious leaders weild a power that believers think is God given and doctrine says is beyond question. A horny man in a dress shouldn't have that kind of control and power.

Not everyone lives in a democracy, you know, and power and influence are still very much behind the scenes even where people are under the illusion that their vote controls the issue.

For some weird reasons politicians who badly failed and still terribly fail this country are being put back in the seat over and over again. Kinda unlimited too. I wonder why that is...

Born and raised a catholic but have no belief in it..would class myself as an atheist now ..if you abide by the law as best you can then you wont go wrong..the whole idea of religion is outdated and a falsehood ..religion should be banned as all it ever did was create division and war..even christmas has lost its true meaning..all commercialised rubbish now

That's very presumptive of you. None of my kids are baptised, we celebrate Xmas on the 25th Dec, but exclude all the religious bits and just treat it as the winter solstice/yule celebration that actually predates christianity. Easter time is a celebration of springtime and rebirth. Another old tradition stole by the Christians. Of course many people in power abuse that power.... not so many of them violate children while telling people that contraception is evil though. That's a special kind of abuse of power.

As you may have guessed am not a Holy Joe

But I do say pray before bed and occasionally pick

out some bible verses online that resonate or make

a lot of sense to me

"When I do good I feel good & when I do bad I feel bad

...and that's my religion"

I have a beleif system that is nothing like any religion.

However I think the Catholic system is great, and having attended catholic schools have nothing but praise for how they educated me, left me open minded, and gave me a way to better myself.

The nicest people I encounter are practicing catholic and protestants, and I hope they all have a fantastic Christmas.
