Maybe spend it with people who go out and help the homeless or visit a hospital or residential home. Lots of helpful ways not to be alone at Christmas

somewhere

There's always help required at various events that feed the elderly ,lonely and homeless on christmas day.

Its a great way of getting out of the house and meeting people for a chat.

I'll be helping cook a dinner in The RDS this year for the first time and looking forward to it

There are groups for people home alone christmas day. They come together to eat dinner and enjoy getting to know new people.

This is actually a very serious topic which effects so many people of all ages, from young to old. Being alone alone, especially on Christmas Day, can cause low self esteem, anxiety, depression and can, in some cases lead to suicidal thoughts.

I fully agree with the contributors who have suggested volunteering. Wouldn’t it be lovely to spend the day you are at your most lonely comforting or even feeding the lonely!

If anyone reading this thread is dreading spending Christmas on their own please feel free to message me, have a chat and talk about it. It’s better to get things off your chest than bottle it all up..... Stevie

I don't think there are any christians on this site.

It can be hard to spend the whole year in non christian ways, and then be reminded the true spirit of christianity at christmas and want a part of it, but its best to just get over it, eat a normal dinner, watch normal tv, and treat it like any other day.

The only thing I am dreading about christmas myself is the hearing the people who banged on about the pope and the church, and how they are not christians and how they are pro life and religion should be removed from the country, putting themselves down as atheist on census forms stripping funding from christian causes, bang on about the toy show and stuff.

Absolutely bang on the money my friend. Hypocrisy of the highest kind.

OP, as some have said, help out with a charity that has an event on that day or see who else around you is alone and maybe have dinner in your place and a few people come over and chip in with the food and cooking and stuff and find out about each other. Community comes in all shapes and sizes and people go in their front door and close and forget about others around them.

I know what its like to be alone at xmas, thankfully things have changed for the better. Im away this xmas but will be helping out those less fortunate ie the homeless. Im not looking for a pat on the back or anything. But maybe donate to a homeless charity. They are always looking for stuff like underwear, socks , deodarants for both sexes. Every little helps those less fortunate. There but for the grace of god I go. My go to charity is PATH. They are base in Portlaoise and bring food upto Dublin on a regular basis. If anyone wants to donate please pm me and I will give you contact details. Thanks in advance. Sorry OP , hope you dont think I am hijacking your post.

Alone myself at Christmas, no big deal. Go to Seaview for the Christmas day finals, then pop down and see a few relatives.

Then it's a blissful quiet day on the sofa lol

It's just another day really. Have done several alone and sure it's the same as any other day I'm on my own.

I do the goal mile or go for a sea swim then home for some dinner.

Have done the charity thing and it's hard work but fair play to anyone considering it.

"Is alone Christmas Day and does not want to spend it alone"

Think of all the positive things you could do with one day without interruption

Read a book

Watch a couple of movies you might have had on the to do list

The DIY jobs you've been putting off all year

Be good to yourself, cook something from scratch

A wish list for next few months

Go for a walk, contemplate what changes you might like to make to your life however small in the next few months

Sometimes it nice to have a day to yourself

It's just another day

That's how I see it, have been alone on Christmas day a couple of times, it's fantastic me time. As you say, it's just another day, it's all about perspective.

Love this post and hate it too. It reminds me of once again eating ham and spuds on my own. Partially by choice.

Next year I will have the courage to help others like some of us are. Really well done.

And if you don't get out and are alone, there are services to help. Also some fabbers willing to lend and an ear.

Take care you lot.

Its just like any other day only youre off work you dont have to celebrate it or mark it in some way..you dont have to conform to a societal norm of what christmas should be..dont fall into that trap...thats what they want you to believe thats what causes mental health problems to develop over this period..christmas can be whatever you want it to be ..enjoy the time off work watch some television and eat good food even if you are alone

Santa claus

Decorating a tree

Community celebrations

Giving and receiving gifts

Lighting candles

Feasting

Singing songs

None of these things have anything to do with Christianity. This time of year was traditionally the pagan winter solstice celebrations, and was stolen by the incoming Christians to appease the locals by keeping their old traditions.

They tagged this time of yeah with the birth of jesus and rennamed it. Non-Christians are probably closer to the original meaning of this festival than Christians. Just because your people stole, took over, and renamed the festival doesnt mean you get to go around calling everyone else hypocrites.

Happy yule!

And did you really just claim that non Christians shouldn't watch the toy show?? Lol. It would be offensive if it wasnt so stupid.

And some people like to steal someone else's cake, rename it, keep all the ingredients the same, then tell the people who invented the recipe that they are hypocrites for having a slice.

My kids will be at their Mums from 4pm onwards Christmas day this year. One of my female friends is in the same position so we've decided she will come round to mine and we can chill in my hot tub. I think there may be one or two other swinging friends wanting to come that are in the same position.. Might end up been a good Christmas.
