I thank them for the air that i breathe the live i have lived thus far.for without their sacrifice my life would not be as it is. 2ndly to recognise the loss born by so many familes whose sons and daughters never returned and saw their lineage become extinct i thank them.we owe all those people and families an internal gratitude. Never ever forget what the provided us with. Freedom of choice and democracy to live.thank you all and rest in peace our heroes.

Step 1 - Never forgetting.

Step 2 - Acting on what was learned.

Wonder if we will ever get to step 2, or will we continue to arm Saudi Arabia so they can butcher the people of Yemen.

Does your list of 'heroes' include The Parachute Regiment?. You know the regiment that slaughered 14 unarmed civilians on the streets of Ireland in 1972, whose only 'crime' was that they were demanding a house a job and a vote! War is mass murder, no matter what your political affiliation, and glorifying it as some kind of heroism just insures more working class cannon fodder for weapons manafacturers and rich politicians. Shame on the lot of you, get this thread to f**k.

Ye know.... maybe he has a point here. I adopted a child from Russia some years ago, and had occasion obviously to be in the country. Seeing the monuments to the countless millions of Russians who were slaughtered, both soldiers and civilians, was heart breaking.

For example, no one alive today, under the age of 30 has any memory of the Berlin Wall, so perhaps its time to leave these ‘occasions’ where they belong... in the past, and concentrate our minds in the here and now, and what’s to come.

We have enough problems today, without opening old wounds from the past.

My list does include the Parachute Regiment. Their efforts during the 2nd world war were indeed heroic. I don't know the truth of what happened in 1972 - like most things the truth lies somewhere in the middle. There were many nationalities in the Paras including Irish and it's their sacrifice amongst others that allows you the freedom to say what you like.

Peace is the greatest way to live but I'm glad we have the military and strong men and women willing to stand and defend us, even if it's not appreciated by all.

narnia

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

by a lake with my rod out

Wear your poppy with pride,

If you think that is best.

But let me explain why,

It won't adorn my chest.

I'll start with Annette McGavigan.

She was just 14 years old.

Shot by your murderous army,

The bravest and the bold.

Manus Derry (15),

An innocent child its said.

Shot while playing with his friends,

Shot in the back of the head.

Jackie Duddy is another,

He barely threw a stone.

Who'd have known that fateful Sunday,

He wouldn't venture home.

Gerald Donaghey marched for civil rights, internment and the right to vote.

Your lying bastard soldiers said,

"he carried bombs in his coat."

17 years old he was,

He'd barely cut his teeth.

But on this special remembrance day,

Will you remember his mother's grief?

The bullet holes are still clear to see,

Even to this day.

The blood still stains the streets,

Children's lives taken away.

So wear your poppy with pride,

If you think that it's best.

These are reasons why,

It won't be on my chest.

12 other souls followed that Sunday,

They even shot a priest.

Tending to the wounded kids,

While the paratroopers had their feast.

"Now is there anyone amongst you dares to blame this on these kids?

Not a soldier boy was bleeding when they nailed the coffin lids."

Ballymurphy, Louglinisland,

Greysteel and all the rest.

Some more reasons why you won't see that blood soaked poppy on my chest...

So wear a lily on Remembrance day,

Honour Ireland's children brave.

Their revenge will be their laughter,

As Britain hangs its head in shame

The work of the brave men and women of the armed forces from all over the world, including Ireland demands respect. Many paid and will pay the ultimate price to defend their country and people.

My poppy that I wear with pride remembers family members, and non family members who fell. Both British and Irish including a great Uncle who taught Irish to the English priests at trinity college before joining up to fight against the Nazi threat and died doing so.

Who said anything about the IRA ? You do know the Lilly is worn around Easter to commemorate the 1916 rising ? The original idea of the poppy ( to remember those that fought and died in the two world wars I wouldn't have a problem with but when the British government where to miserable to have a different day for its armed forces so hijacked the 11th. So now you can't criticise the poppy or you are some sort Provo (which I'm not) I just don't think we should be celebrating war criminals (there's lots of examples Iraq etc).

And my point is that the lily was also hijacked by supporters of the provos so it's synonymous with the darker side of republicanism. So I don't think we should celebrate murderers.

The irony...I don't remember seeing any post remembering our war of independence or Easter rising, I'm sure you will all remember and gave your lilies to the ready when the time comes, though I wont hold my breath.

Well done to those of you wearing poppies, I'm sure all those murdered by regiments in the north, and British agents in the south during dublin and Monaghan bombings will appreciate it. No doubt you have purchased your lillies in good time.

Why does the work of essentially paid mercenaries "demand respect"?

Granted during the first and second World wars there was a different mindset and indeed great sacrifice. However the jingoistic bollocks that goes along with the pseudo deification of soldiers is stomach churning. These people are volunteers and know exactly what they are getting into.

im curious as to why this thread was set up in the Ireland section of the forum by people who are British and don’t consider themselves in any way Irish

Was it meant to antagonize?

I’m also curious

with the British multi billion annual spend on defense why they can’t spend a fraction of 1% on looking after their servicemen and who instead have to depend on Charity

"im curious as to why this thread was set up in the Ireland section of the forum by people who are British and don’t consider themselves in any way Irish

Was it meant to antagonize?

I’m also curious

with the British multi billion annual spend on defense why they can’t spend a fraction of 1% on looking after their servicemen and who instead have to depend on Charity

No self respecting Irish person would wear a poppy so yep, just posted to antagonize.

Of course it was posted here to antagonize.

But no need to drag up old history,Just have to look at yemen, to know that if they dont care about what is happening there, they wont care about some story in Ireland either. Posting it will just make them laugh, like how the rest of the world laughs at them not being able to defend the british flag tanker ship from an Iran speed boat.

It should not have been on the Irish forum. My uncle who I never knew .joined the British army at 18 .because he couldn't get work here .he was lost at dunkirk ...never found .like many more irish teenagers .let's just remember and respect them in our own way ..because some people will never . .just don't get dragged into it...

So you always wear a lily as a mark of respect too I take it? Being Irish and remembering those who fought for your freedom that is.

Furthermore, you do know the majority only fought in ww1 as they were promised independence don't you? The majority had joined the Irish volunteers to fight against the UVF but with out break of war, both were promised what they wanted if they joined the fight on behalf of the British. Many of them came back and joined the IRA immediately after realising they were all lied to, once again.

“A mark of respect”

To the paras who shot unarmed civilians in Derry and even those 2 unarmed and innocent Protestant civilians on the Shankhill?

To the brave boys who used an innocent Irishman’s skull as an ashtray after Ballymurphy?

To Soldier F who shot an innocent child with a learning disability in the back ?

To the chaps who burned down cork and balbriggan ?

To the brave boys who machine gunned civilians at a football game in Croke Park?

Do one

Yeah, it wasnt just world war 1 and 2. For as long as the Uk were here people joined up to the British army mostly with good intentions in their heart. Most of the really bad things that happened here were done by people they shipped in to do them. Most never seen the horrors of the black and tans first hand.

I have ancestors myself who joined the British Army around them times, and its embarassing, cause everyone knows they were made fools of. Even the Connaught Rangers ended in a mutiny.

People dont sing songs about good intentions, so they will always be overshadowed by how the UK turned on them, more than their intentions.

But it is what it is.

"Does your list of 'heroes' include The Parachute Regiment?. Shame on the lot of you, get this thread to f**k."

Hmm, I wonder, about all the arm chair Republicans whining about the British establishment.. how many watched premier league matches wearing their jerseys... if you're so Irish you shit shamrock.

You're moaning is about as valid as the idiot outside the stadium in Dublin complaining about foreign sports being played in the capital. Whilst wearing a Celtic Jersey..

There would have been no need for the provos if Ireland was left to the Irish.

There will be anarchy. Loyalists will create more havoc. As much as the provos did in the past, and do today.

My family are from both sides of the border. We've lived through it. Not something we want back. In the name of the people, pfft.

I’m interested to hear how and where loyalists would create “havoc”

Without the full military support of the British state which they had in the past

If ever there’s to be a United Ireland,it will come about through democratic consent as set out in the GFA

This will involve the British Government being co-guarantors of any agreement possibly in tandem with the EU and US also.

Are you seriously suggesting they will arm people and they leaving?

No one ever mentioned that. You made the mental jump there. Read a little. Loyalists are already stirring up trouble and promising unrest. As much as the 'freedom fighters' on the other side.

The scum will get their weapons regardless of the government.

But you did

You mentioned “havoc”

Are you suggesting that a small criminal rump should prevent a Democratic majority decision in favor of a UI as set out and agreed by both the Irish and British Governments,

should that come to pass?

Oh and I am “well read”

Easily as well as you are

There's a small criminal rump as you put it, fighting on both sides. Lest you forget.

And if we are united democratically, great. But the Republic in the state it's in, would ruin the north. Honest assessment there.

is there majority support for it? 51% up north, 60 something down south.

Our government and theirs will cock it up.

Sounds like you don’t want a United Ireland even if it’s delivered democratically and with majority consent of the people of NI,should it ever come to pass.

I’ll say good luck to you at this point and let you be on your way.

If making mental jumps that weren't there was an Olympic sport, it would be your trophy.

My family and I, would love it. But we can see the monumental cock ups that will be made by both governments. You can't?

Think about out leadership. And theirs. Really think. Think about the current situationd. Ate we in a position to do the people justice right now?

“The full military support of the British state as they did in the past”; what a crock if shite. The only support loyalists were disaffected locally based soldiers (UDR) and RUC. The regular army and the government had nothing to do with it

The only ones killing each other now are drug dealing scum loyalists, and Collins was killed in a civil war that lasted a year!

Sure it doesn't matter now, those days are over yet we still have the same people trying to antaginise people on a swinging site lol get a grip.

It's all good though, the next elections in the north combined with the Brexit outcome will see the end of unionism/loyalism in Ireland and they will finally realise that they are Irish too, exactly how they are seen as in the UK!

Sure you can take any snippet of time and skew the facts one way or the other. The UK has over a million dead in Ireland on their hands, and at the end of if the Irish stood up and fought for them, and the UK couldnt keep its word, and is struggling to keep its word on no border in the north.

This is why its antagonistic to expect Irish people to stand up and wear a poppy to commemorate the people who didnt care about them.

Also all murder is wrong. You cant excuse the murder of catholics by other people because some have killed each other. That's a crazy thing to even imply.
