He certainly was an Irish Icon and have fond memories when I was very young and my Mam and Gran viewing and listening to him over the years.

But lately I viewed his Annie Murphy interview on You Tube and it was disgraceful how he treated her.

The Late Late Gay Byrne RIP

"Am I the only person that didn't like him ? I thought he was pompous and condescending "
He was.. but i guess you cant blame him. Hes an institution.

The positive stuff with Pflynn was legendary and was a great moment for politics in ireland in general.

The negative stuff most definitely the Annie Murphy interview. Disgusting behavior but apparently he apologized later in life for it.

No, you're not the only one. His constant pronouncements about how we should rejoin the UK as we'd be so much better off as British subjects back in the seventies and eighties put me off him for life.

To be fair though, his skills as a presenter far outweigh anything that RTÉ has had since him. I would say he certainly wasn't overpaid in the way the talentless muppets there are there now are.

They're the very definition of overpaid.. Dear god when you think of the sums of money some of them get. Fuck...

Did Gay's accountant who ripped him off all those years ago leaving him almost penniless her a mention yet? Grandfather of our current housing minister. What am interesting world we live in.

I didn't like him as a presenter, irritating and condescending in my opinion, but he seems to have meant something to a lot of Irish people and I'm sure it's a sad loss for his loved ones.

Hugely patronising too, his face when Stephen Fry gave him his opinion did it for me!

Kinda easy to be the best presenter on tv when you're practically the only show in town. Overpaid but thats fair play to him.
