Hi folks. Do you think the social side and aspects of the internet are a good thing for society or a bad thing for society?

In respect to online dating, social media platforms, apps like wh*tsapp etc.

I believe that they have a negative influence on society and in particular how we interact with each other.

What are your thoughts?

Its like everything ..there are huge advantages of the internet but the art of conversation is a dying one as nearly everyone are all heads down into their phones in case they " miss " something amazing like someone putting up a photo of their breakfast on it..and there will be a new generation of internet zombies whose sense of real life social connections will be zero...and that's gonna be a scary place...and of course ,stating the obvious here ,the internet has amazing facilities for people to avail of ...book flights ..AHH you know the rest...won't go on about them ...the internet used responsibly is Brilliant ...used irresponsibly.. different animal altogether.

I see your point. Literally just in respect to social side of the internet. Not in respect to shopping or purchasing things or lesrning material. Just the social aspect.

Put very simply it is probably the best thing and the worst thing ever invented for mankind.

As far as the social aspect of it is concerned we'd be far better off as a society without internet. It's a great tool but can go way too dark

In that regard it's the end of civilisation for sure. But we're facing other big challenges too.

I think we are more and more relying on contacting people via the internet, rsther than a tually speaking in person or over the phone. This highlighted the other day in a news interview. A man was being interviewed about being locked into his hotel complex with other holiday makers, due to the hotel not receiving payment due to the collapse of Thomas Cook. He was describing what was going on. They licked us in and would'nt let us out until they received payment. He went onto say the hotel then turned the internet off. His response to this was unbelievable. He said, "they turned the internet off, so we have had no way of contacting anyone on the outside"

I wasn't thinking, wtf has it come to? You never heard of a telephone call? You know, the same device you use to feck around online, it's called a mobile phone and it works abroad. I'm also thinking, did you even try a landline? People now see it as the main way of interacting or communicating with others. I just thought what an idiot.

People need to be educated in debating in primary/secondary school.

They really need to learn about virtue signalling, gas lighting, appeals to emotion, trolling, devils advocate, click bait etc

It wouldn't just help with online, but with political debates etc. A lot of online tactics are spilling over into political world, ie the sterotypical politican kissing a baby photo, replaced with a politician hopping on some twitter trend etc etc etc.

I'd agree there.
