Do you keep stuff for “Best”

belfast/holywood

When visiting grandparents and aunties etc, they all had stuff like glasses and plates for “ best “. It was never used . Just kept for special occasions. Not that it was super expensive just probably a bit more than run of the mill stuff. Some even had entire “best rooms”, normally the front room which was always off limits, being packed full of stuff for “best”. Parents did it to a lesser degree and I did too. But nowadays , I use all expensive cut glass, dinner services, cars, watches etc. I mean what’s the point of buying stuff if your never ever gonna use it

Ireland was like that back then. Loads of that generation only usually allowed one very special person access to a particular area....unless of course the doctor or the priest was coming

I wouldn't call it an occasion, but I do have a particular jacket that I just wear to funerals.

Used to keep expensive cut crystal glasses for special occasions but use them all the time now . If u have a £50 bottle of wine or a £200 bottle of champagne, why serve it in Tesco value cheapo thin glasses.
