Because there is no accountability in this country. Scandal after scandal and how many have even been to court let alone jail. Or even lost their job !!

Imo its because we the public allow them to get away with it.

As a nation we huff and puff each time a scandal arises but once the initial fury dies down we go back to living like nothing has happened.

We're not militant enough and keep electing the same gombeen politicians

Some people are cunts.

Cunts with power are dangerous and will abuse it.

But dont buy into the whole " in this country" rubbish. Its a human thing there is a Vicky Phelan of some sort in every country in the world even the most progressive. We are not the greatest at holding our institutions accoubtable.but we are also far from the worst

I think it's the way the institutions are set up

In usa there is real tensikn between agencies, state and judiciary.

Here it's all about riding it out

We don't educate people in debating and political tactics.

Most Irish people do not know what an appeal to emotion is, a logical fallacy, etc etc.

Appeals to emotion are supposed to be ignored in debates. No matter how tragic it was, the debate should remain in logic not emotions.

However the governments capitulate to appeals to emotion all the time, and have kind of stopped doing their jobs and just wait for a large appeal to happen, then they give in to that appeal and people hail them as doing great. So they get a pat on the back for doing nothing for years and fixing it later on.

This is the voters fault as they get stuck up on emotional issues and dont tackle boring practical, logical issues before they become emotional.

That means the minister for health can give the ok for a hospital to be built that will have people in the a&e on trolleys in the corridor from day 1, and get away with it, by capitulating to an appeal to emotion and people voting for him/her anyway.
