Has anyone else noticed?, Was walking around a packed Tesco car park and noticed a random car with a sunroof. And I said to myself ; why am I looking at that car!. And then it hit me . The sunroof . Something was niggling me. So I glanced around the huge car park and only saw 1 other car with a sunroof. WTF I thought. How haven’t I noticed this before ?. Sunroofs?..., they just don’t seem to come with a car anymore.!

Yes they do but are more subtle. I have a new VW Tiguan and has a sunroof. New ones have retractable which slide along the roof and not pop up like old one in my dad's 99 corolla

I did check out nearly all the roofs . Just 2. None of those retractable ones. I think air con has taken over

Optional extra, Irish are known for buying base spec cars with no optional extras.

It's due to our vrt that other countries dont have.

The newer cars dont come with a sunroof, they come with a sliding glass roof. You don't see many people with that option specced in Ireland though, but you can get it on things like vw polo if you want.

Oh yeah I know it’s an optional extra and a number of years ago I think it was a bit of a status symbol - you’d get into someone’s car, they’d open the sunroof and you’d go all ooohhhh you’ve got a sunroof and he ( or she) would proudly show off its functionality in all its glory. Now there are better in-car toys to show off with and sunroofs are so yesterday so no-one gets them. Most cars come with air con as standard these days so why would anyone opt for a sunroof

Yup

Noticed the same thing recently.

Still, post brexit it'll be back to sunroofs as virtually all air con units are made in the eu

Sunroofs were a thing until everyone had one, so people started buying cabriolets to go one better, until everyone had one of those too. Now everyone has air con and nobody even cracks a window anymore

Unless I'm mistaken, nobody makes cars here either... Will we all be reverting to donkey and cart to pop to Lidl?

Have a glass sunroof on my yoke, love it. Especially on tilt when it’s warm out and no need for the air con.

Honestly - I don't want to offend anyone - but a sun roof in Ireland is pretty pointless.

Depends on what part of the country you live in DH. Some of us do see the sun on a regular basis but yes, for the most part they're wasted. A bit like people living in cities who insist on driving enormous 4 wheel drives they can't park or climb down out of and have bull bars on the front in case they need to push a fallen tree trunk out of the way in Temple Bar

I wouldn’t say pointless. I use mine a lot actually. Now a convertible on the other hand, that’s pretty pointless

Yeah I know, sunny south east and strawberry stuff, most will still have a lovely but light complexion and unless you do put on sun cream you'll end up with a set of red ears and neck. So a lot of hassle for a bit of car coolness.

God I thought this was going to be about C section deliveries.

Coming out of the sunroof is a phrase for it

With the advent of AirCon/climate control, sunroofs have become less common, mostly because the requirement for ventilation /cooling is less, and sunroofs were always just an invitation for leaks

A panoramic glass roof is now more common for brightening up the interior. You can still get a tradition sunroof, but they tend to be an expensive option, so much less frequent.

Guess what I do for a living?

Don’t mention sunroof leaks ffs- my mk3 Ford Capri was a bitch for leaks. Top tip - get a dealer to change the seals in future .
