Can a person who has a full licence drive another vehicle if they don't have full insurance of their own. They're only a named driver on somebody else's insurance

No, as they do not have insurance of their own.

Even when the insurance policy is in their name it will depend on the policy itself.

the person in question was told they can. They were told other person's insurance covers them to drive their vehicle.

Theoretically you can drive any other vehicle, but you might not be insured.

As far as I know you need an open drive insurance to cover other vehicles.

If the other person has open drive on their policy anyone with a full licence can drive it. But a lot of people get confused and think they have open drive when they don’t. Get them to check their policy.

no, the person can only drive the car in which he/she is named driver of. Tip you can also get named driver no claims bonus through axa. Just because he/she has a full driving licence doesnt mean they dont need insurance, they do and so does everyone, either be named driver on another policy or take out there own policy but whatever policy you have is still fixed to the 1 vehicle. If you have your own policy and its fully comprehensive then some insurance companies will allow you to drive any cars up to 2.0ltr engines as long as that vehicle has an insurance policy in place. But remember named drivers cannot drive any other car at all. only the car stated on the main drivers insurance policy.

Yes. Absolutely. How else do you think people drive company cars? You don't have to have your own insurance, but you should check whoever owns the car has adequate insurance that will cover you, a commercial open policy for example.

they 100% are not covered to drive another persons car if they are only a named driver on someones policy

If the vehicle owner has an open drive policy (means anyone can drive his/her car with his/her permission) than yes. Just give insurance quick call for reassurance.

how can someones insurance cover everyone to drive there car? Each person needs insurance for themselves be it a named driver on that policy or there own policy and even then 3rd party doesnt cover any car only the one thats stated on the policy

Always best to check as policies vary from one provider to another, but as someone who has worked in the industry, open drive insurance is quite common... You just have to provide a copy of your licence. Much like when renting a car.

Come to think of it i could have sworn id seen stevie wonder fly past me down south a few weeks ago, i guess this post explains it, all making sense now. Ps you dont need to work at an insurance company desk to understand whats written on a policy that an insurer has made, but as said above each policy can have several adjustments pros cons etc depending what the insurance company allows after considering your status. The north and south may differ but in my opinion it would be very dangerous to let anyone who held just a driving licence into a vehicle without a valid policy or being the named driver. If it does confirm true then illl be dayumed. Anyway drive it like ya stole it big son keep er between the hedges.

End of the day the insurance company told them "No we wont cover you but the owner of the cars insurance will".

What they meant by that isnt "you are 100% covered under every insurance policy car on every car in the state", they meant "It will be up to the owner of the cars insurance if you are covered or not, so check with them".

Being a named driver on one policy wont disqualify you from being covered from an open driver policy on another car. Like being named on the family car, and driving the work van, or the bosses car (if he has the insurance for it).

If youre being covered by someone elses insurance then you have to just check with them if youre covered, not your own insurance.

for eg I'm the policy holder on my insurance and have a named driver under me. They have no insurance of their own so can they drive a random other vehicle. Some people are saying if the policy holder of that vehicle has open insurance then they can.

lol the person I'm talking about is not a named driver on the car they want to drive. The question is if you're a named driver can you drive ANY OTHER CAR!.

Thats what you said at the top, the other persons insurance would cover them.

The confusion probably came up because whoever intially asked the insurance company the question asked it in a way to get a yes.

for example.

"I am a named driver am I covered to drive any other car?"..."no".

"I am a named driver and I want to drive another car that is fully insured, am I covered?".."Yes the other insurance will cover you".

"I am a named driver and I want to drive another car that is insured but unsure if it is covered for me to drive, it does not have open insurance".."No youre not covered by us, ring them to find out".

I personally have found people often ask questions in a strange way to get the answer they want so later they can say "well they told me it was okay", when in reality they never would have said it was okay if given the full details.

thanks for that information of what probably happend i was wondering for the life and soul of me of what could have probably happend, maybe it did happen probably didnt but who knows as long as we probably new everything that didnt happen and thats all matters.

So if I go into a supermarket and the price of something is 89 pence , and I give them £1, do I get 11p change or 21p change ?. And can I challenge the amount of change I am given .... F F S
