your imagination

Are you using something like booking.com or trivago to search? If so, the hotels may not be booked out... Most hotels only allocate a small % of rooms to sites like these and it may just be that the allocation is sold out. Try contacting the hotels directly... Sometimes you'll even get a better deal!

I use booking .com all the time and usually get great deals.

So do I.. But I also know that when booking.com says a hotel is sold out, it just means the 5 or 10 rooms the hotel allocated to booking.com have sold out... They may actually have lots of rooms still available directly through the hotel, and if you're booking for tonight and they've plenty of unallocated rooms left to sell, you might even get your room that little bit cheaper

Nothing special on in Athlone this week. If you have a car try Hodson Bay. Or feeling generous, try Wineport. Or the one at Kilmartin roundabout, €55 a night, loads of rooms.

Galway

I use hotels on a weekly basis for work. If you ring the hotel directly & ask for a commercial rate - is always between €60-€80 b&b. Hope this helps

Slane

Try Athlone Springs OP, it's just outside the town and usually better value than the Sheraton or the Radisson. I paid €75 there last month.
