City Center

A friend of mine lives in a rough-ish estate and is renting a semi detached house there. There is a driveway to park her car in and a little side path that leads to the back garden. For the past few months a crazy lady in the estate has been wandering freely into her back garden. She is known locally as the smoke lady because she wanders the estate daily looking for smokes.

It started with her ringing the doorbell (aggressively, two to three times a day) but now she has moved onto just wandering into the back and looking in the Ash bucket for butt's. My friend has confronted her and even called to her house to insist she stops, as she has an autistic child in the house who is fearful of strangers anyway and nothing has worked.

The lady in question is probably not right in the head and when confronted just says sorry and asks for smokes some more. She stands there vacantly when asked to leave and a few times has tried to open the shed. She does not leave straight away and acts like she has not heard what you are saying. Sounds funny but this a a twice (sometimes more?) daily occurance and feels her child can't even play outside any more.

The landlord won't put up a fence and she is at a loss at what to do, I'm hoping some of you might have some bright ideas

sounds like trespassing to me so go to the cops with a record of when she shows up etc. add trying trying to get into the shed it could be seen as an attempted break in. even your friend going to the cops to see what can be done would be a good option

Maybe call the guards as she is breaking an entry by wondering into your friends back yard or even the threat of it might be enough?

I personally would inform her if she does it again I will be recording her and informing the guards and if she does it again I would stick to my word especially with an autistic child I would not trust her in my back uninvited.

She has threatened her with calling the guards and to no avail, she keeps coming back. Thanks though, probably best thing to do is just ask them what they can do.

I know trespassing laws in this country are a double edge sword as you are not allowed to endanger them (the trespasser) in anyway and using reasonable force can land you in trouble

Tell your friend to get rid of the Ash bucket

Put her butts out safely and then put into her bin

If she has no Ash Bin then the neighbour won't be looking for butts long enough to smoke

Put hose that will open automatically when she passes or that can be turned on from the inside... I want to see her going to complain about being splashed by the automated irrigation system while entering in someone esle property

That doesn't sound endangering to me

Get rid of the ash bucket and put a fence/gate for access to the back garden.

Send a solicitors letter to the landlord advising how this is badly affecting the quality of life and that is now becoming a very uncomfortable situation

He can either build a fence or drop the rent

Only way to deal with crazy is to be even more crazy! Hosepipe and a good soaking everytime she enters the property or just scream at the top of your lungs beside her untill she leaves! Or a loud whistle! Dont speak to her at all. Just blow loudly on the whistle untill she fucks off! It'll likely also annoy your neighbours who will want you to stop! If a few of them get involved then you can always reason with the neighbours that your at your wits end and need her to stop for the sake of your child!

South Side.

I grew up in rough areas of Dublin, and there were all sorts of odd people around. They were tolerated as they were part of a very colourful community. Sometimes you have to solve your own problems. Disconnect your doorbell, build a gate, of maybe leave a supply of fags in the front garden. She seems to be a bit odd, to put it mildly, and it's more a matter for social services, her family, than the cops. However, if the cops are informed every time she bothers you, then they might have some ideas. Good luck to your friend sorting it out.

To be honest, she sounds like she might be on the spectrum herself and you trying to take a firm/ aggressive defense might not work.

Remove the temptation (smoke bucket) and don’t engage either verbally or physically. If you remove the reason to enter the backyard then she’ll stop.

Longshot but if your friend gives up smoking there will be no more butts laying around and no reason for her to wonder over there any more. Plus there are health benefits to quitting also..

If thats not an option maybe a big dog?

Sounds very complicated because it's your neighbours word against hers which will leave further complications down the line x

From what you describe; someone else's comment referring to her mental state seems appropriate. So if she is presenting with this consistent, albeit aberrant, behaviour it's certainly indicative of someone with an enduring mental health condition. There's mention of a child living with her with autism? For both of these reasons I'd be tempted to call a local community mental health team. Explain the stiu to them, suggest that there might be safety concerns about the child given his/her mothers behaviour. I'd also follow that up

With a call to the Guards to inform them

Of the behaviour and your action; call social services and urge them to coordinate a response.

"Put up the fence,

Problem solved. "

Is the correct answer. She puts up a fence herself the issue is solved instead of expecting someone else to solve it for her.

Exactly.

Put up a fence it's very simple.

Easier than screaming, blowing whistles, water hoses , calling Gaurds etc.

Put the fence back up and don't expect somones else to do it .

Removing the reason this person goes in there in first place is key. This is an issue for social services unless criminal damage has occurred. Put the bucket out the front

So many different approaches but in reality surely you have to do abit of self help yourself. If the landlord wont erect a fence then simply get one yourself.Cut back on the fags for a couple of weeks and it will pay for the fence. You cant expect others to solve the problem. Its clear that there is an issie with the woman involved but get rid of the ciggies out the back and start working on getting a fence. If it takes a few weeks to save up for it then find a way.If her presence upsets her autistic child then you will surely find a way to get a fence.Best of luck to her as trespassing is wrong but it seems that lady has her own issues also so its been wise and fair that she hasnt been aggresive with her so far.Im not sure many would have the same patience.

Put a big lock on the gate and barbwire over the top so it can't be climbed over and make sure walls surrounding the house can't be climbed
