Sex drive and anti depressants

Well folks. Just curious if others have experienced something similar. I'm on anti depressants years. Low seretonin levels. I'm very pro talking about mental health. I stopped taking my medication. Some may say this is silly but my depression isn't that bad that I'm a basket case off them. I'm now staying off them permanently with the okay from my doctor. My sex drive has gone through the roof. I feel like a nympho haha . It makes me realise what a significant effect it had on my sex drive. I never stopped being sexual with my partner in them but now it's through the roof. I'm not advocating anybody doing this just curious of others experience on and off them ré their sex drive. Thanks Folks

I’ve Watched this post for the past few hours with interest to see what would be added to it and am surprised to see no-one jumped in.

Thinking the topic may be sensitive and perhaps people feeling awkward about responding to it.

I’ll refrain from making an ill-advised joke about “of course you were depressed, you weren’t getting any sex!” As that would be insensitive. Oops!

Well done for coming forward and sharing. I had someone close to me that went through a similar set of circumstances as you describe and it is a big step to leave behind the crutch of the anti-depressants and normalizing yourself back to into full emotional and mental responsibility again. Well done! That is the hard step. Good luck with what lies ahead.

Fair play for talking about depression and how it affects people. I am on antidepressants and it does effect my sex drive. Its has gone into major hiding but saying that as a single mom with hardly any support I don't have time anyway for me much less fab.

I have just seen this now

When I come off my medication my sex drive also goes through the roof. While I am on them I still have a sex drive but no where near as high as I normally would have.

Happy for ya and your partner but never had to use them but I’m sure the endorphins are helping the mood . Hope your partner can keep up now

What a very brave and informative post. I concur totally with the sentiments expressed. I had been on anti depressants for years, even tho mild dose, It took me ages to understand that it was them that had played havoc to my sex life as regards erection etc. When I explained this to my doc, I got the feeling he looked at my age and was thinking that at my age, does it really matter. Took the decision myself to come off them even tho he frowned on it. Did so because I have started to see someone unconnected to fab, so explains why I am not active here now. I am taking it day by day, but yes, being honest I could see myself going back on meds... It's how we are built and we have to do best we can, but I do think there should be more discussed between doctor and patient when prescribing.

Fair play op for being sincere in your thread. I went through a pretty difficult time and had to go on antidepressants and as a guy it affected me pretty badly. Before i went on them i had a very high sex drive, as soon as i went on them, within a few days, sex drive had significantly decreased and getting erections was difficult. Eventually i got to a stage where my doc deemed it no longer necessary to use them and indeed my sex drive returned with a vengeance as if it was making up for lost time lol! I equate it to a similar effect of when i quit smoking for 5 years and went back on them, it was like i was making up for lost time haha! It’s normal, im sure your partner doesn’t mind one bit :D

We still had sex very regularly. It just has gone to a higher level.

I've always struggled with depression and anxiety, but hit a particularly bad patch about 10 years ago and started a programme of Lexapro.

I was a late developer and had just been getting in to the swing of things (eh!) sexually at that time, but then I went on the anti-depressants and they seriously impacted my ability to get it up.

I developed terrible anxiety about this, because to a 20 year old discovering sex this was what life was all about. Eventually I decided the medication wasn't for me, but the anxiety of the medication induced ED remained and I'm still 50/50 on whether I'll get it up on the first meeting with a girl. Once I get comfortable with them the anxiety disappears and then there's no keeping the prick down!

Anti-depressants can impact everyone in different ways. Sometimes fleeting, sometimes not. But what I've learned is that it's just about having an understanding and patient partner, which I think is as true in your case as mine. Take the time to talk about it and I'm sure your partner won't have any issues!

Whenever I can't make a woman cum, they usually get embarassed and tell me they are on anti depressants and it must be that.

This has happened 4 or 5 times.

Loving all the messages off you guys. Many people feel uncomfortable being able to publicly talk about their experiences and have pm,d me. To some it may seem brave but I'm a real open book. So many people are depressed but just don't have a diagnosis. I think its important to talk about these things and normalise being able to talk about your struggles with "the black dog". My sex life was always good but things have really sky rocketed sex drive wise. Feeling good and reaping added sexual benefits

I've been on anti depressants approx 6 months & its def affected my libido. I want off them but don't want to go cold turkey. Can't wait to come off them & sex has been frustrating lately

Cbd oil is a great alternative for anxiety and depression. I've plenty of friends and people I know who found it wonderful.

My sex drive always been low, was on anti depressants a few years ago and didn't notice any difference but than I wasn't sexually active. I'm off them maybe 4 years or so and sex drive is still low but I think it's more a mental thing for me. I don't get satisfaction when masturbating so I don't bother.

I still get bouts of depression but have learned to cope with it. As someone else said the doctors are to quick to prescribe pills without trying to get to the root of the issue. More talking and acceptance by people is needed

I was on Lexapro for a few years and yes, found I had a very low sex drive.

Chatted to the Doctor and I'm now on pills that have no side effects. So happy days

I am not a doctor or expert of any kind but have friends that suffer from depression and they find that CBD oils do help , and no they dont get you high cause there's no THC on them , i tried them on my vape awhile ago when was in serious pain and it did help

Hi OP. I had noticed this thread and read it with interest, but hadn't posted, because I've posted on so many similar threads across all the different fora that sometimes I feel like a spokesperson for mental health issues

I've taken anti-depressants in the past (prescribed wrongly as it turned out by a doctor who didn't see the bigger picture), and they completely decimated my libido. Not just my libido in fact, but my ability to enjoy just about anything. I lived in an apathetic fog, unable to feel, and went through the motions of living, until I couldn't anymore.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with medication, but I do think a lot of it is mis-prescribed, and a more holistic approach is needed. Getting the medication and dosage right takes time, and works best in tandem with counselling.

Anti-depressants alone are not a permanent solution, and if it's affecting something as basic as your libido, I'd be asking your GP about trying something else. There are some brands which don't affect libido. If your doctor isn't aware that sex is important to you (and as a swinger I'd assume it is), then they may not have taken that particular side-effect into account.

Medication is not always the answer something alot of Doctors fail to realise is the power of talking, support groups, mindfulness etc..

I was on Zispin for almost 2 years and it really wiped out erections for me. Sex drive was still there though so quite frustrating.

Off medication a few months now and erections back thankfully. But I do feel that probably not AS much as before.

Very worthwhile topic. Thanks for posting.
