I like to think that a wink works, I quite enjoy my monthly wink, but yes most are ignored.

So hard to write the life story to everyone that doesnt really want to hear it, be lovely if it were a wink, a wink back, then at least you would know the other party is open to talk..

Exactly what willium has said. Send a wink and if you get one back then send a message. Don't read too much into it or over annalise it. It's just a simple first flirt!

If I see a local who has viewed my profile and I view their profile and I like what I see, I'll wink at them. This gives them a chance to not reply because they were only looking but not interested or to message me, or even wink back and then I'll message them. To me it's the lesser of 2 evils because if I message them and they were only looking then chances are they will not reply but instead start a forum thread about it cause that seems to be popular at the minute

The problem with most of the above is that you're trying to guess, or even assuming, what's going on in the other person's head, which is 100% impossible on Fab as in real life.

We ask people not to wink in our profile but some still do (rarely!), what's the point? It's so easy to write a message, although it seems to be becoming a lost art on here recently!

A wink is the lazy way of saying hello and if they're like that here they'll be the same in the sack

Yup, 100%! Or even in the bar, let alone the sack!"

Or even in online conversation. It's on par with a 'hi' message.

I like that there's a wink function

Personally I don't agree that it's lazy. Some people may not be great at starting a conversation but that doesn't mean they're not worth talking to! At least if both parties start with a wink there's common ground there

It may not work for everyone but that's why Fab gives you options!

As for hiding your profile afterwards, I'm stumped

Yes. I would never not reply to a message, even if it were to say No. I was brought up, not dragged up, so my conscience would be killing me if I was bad mennered

There's conversation and there's conversation though, and as I'm not one known for brevity, I prefer someone I can converse with and feel I'm getting as good as I give. A wink or a mere 'hi' aren't a good indication of that, especially if the profile is also very bare.

I find that for 'hi' messages the following usually happens..

Random Guy: hi

Me: Hi there. How are you?

RG: gud. U?

Me: Wonderful thanks.

At which point they either can't think of anything else to say/ask and the conversation grinds to a halt or they say 'tell me about u?' or 'wat u in2?' and I lose the will to live...

As a gentleman here recently told me... I'm not one for using one word when 20 will do

PlayD8's summed it up grandly there Personally, I'm guilty as charged at being a serial essayist -help!don't help!- and it's a real thing at times. Cannot CANNOT get self across in a few wee scribbles. Yesssss the operating frequency of output probably should depend on who yer talking to or how outgoing they are, then scale the verbals-by-digits up or down accordingly. In theory. D'ya see what I mean? ffs why paint a picture, write the great Irish novella instead..or a pamphlette? and off we go again jeesh, total incorrigible chatterballs
