Just listening to the radio! 1 Irish person (persons living in Ireland) is diagnosed every 17 hours with HIV!! Scary ! Thoughts and comments.....

Fortunately HIV isn't what it was even a decade ago and people on treatment can have normal lives with normal life expectancies nowadays, even becoming untransmissable a few months after treatment.

The trouble is that many people don't get checked regularly and if you have it but don't know, you can easily spread it in the time it takes you to find out you have it.

Play safe and get checked regularly people. We also need to have better sex education in schools, as when condoms came up in my education, it was merely about preventing pregnancy. There was nothing about STDs included at all.

Nothing racist or homophobic about it..like i said statistics dont lie..Hiv is most prevelant amongst men who have sex with men and in recent years we have had an influx of west africans where hiv infection is very common..if its racist and homophobic to point that out then i give up..you are obviously a hypersensitive member of PC brigade

Is it possible that more people are getting tested nowadays and this could be the reason for it been so high. Times are changing and ppl are more aware of sexual health than the yrs gone by. It's spoken about more freely and less a shameful feeling of getting tested. I would be more shocked if it continues over the coming yrs. Well thats just my two cent anyway

I’d say the rise in stats is partially a rise in getting tested but it’s also still from a level of carelessness among a small amount of people too. I know I tend to be over cautious about this stuff but I’d prefer to be too cautious than not cautious enough.

Over half of all new cases are from migrants coming into Ireland, they are classed as "irish people".

The rate of white irish hiv has remained the same for a decade and is fairly low.

If you expect people on here to care, then they wont. The person with HIV was able to get a meet a day for a month on here.

The people on here are the sort that would use it as an excuse to show porn to children at an earlier age in school as part of a new sex education act, but not tell their kids that the risk is higher among gay people or migrants etc. The opinion without evidence that sex education is the problem, can not be shifted from their head.

Brazillians are second highest risk group, sub saharan africans being the top.

They are ate epidemic levels due to the fact that nearly all our brazillian/black migrants came after their countries got a HIV problem, not before, like the UK/USA.

Our statistics will likely be twisted in that direction for a generation or two, we try and make sure their babies are born HIV free by giving them medication, but 1 or 2 a year are born every other year with HIV. Essentially we have to medicate them and wait for them to die and wait for all their children to be born HIV free over a few generations before their stats will improve.

I'm glad we can help them, even though we are a speck on the map next to africa or brazil and their resources dwarf ours.

I went to my local doctor recently to be retested and got my results by text a week later. Very handy. I much prefer going there than going to the clinic.

Same here. Going to my GP is much easier than attending a clinic, and it's just another scheduled visit now, like a cervical smear or flu jab. Really nothing to worry about.

I went to my doctor a few weeks ago and got the results in a couple of days. And I’ve used the self test kits sold by Superdrug . Better safe than sorry.

It’s interesting reading this, there are studies that show Bi men to be a higher risk of STI than straight or gay men. The question is would you avoid a demographic of person in order to lessen your risk? Obviously we never play without protection, and the person above saying you can do bareback with an aids sufferer on treatment needs to realise that aids is only one of the STIs you can be exposed to so saying that is just bad advice. If a condom breaks, and they do - and you have avoided statistical risk demographics, you may have limited your danger.

Hiv not aids..when you get to the aids stage the last thing on your mind is sex

Ok. Pardon me for misreading what you intended to question.

I would think there are mixture of reasons for the amount of new cases each year.

Increase in people coming to Ireland where treatment was too expensive to access or prohibitive to access.

The knowledge that the disease isn't the killer disease it once was and people are more willing to take risks.

People who are infected but don't regularly get tested and engage in casual sex with myriad partners on sites such as this.

There are also those within the gay community that seek it out believe it or not as they see it as the ultimate taboo

There are also people with the disease that "stealth" others who know they have it. Don't take their meds and want to infect others.

With the ease of availablity of casual hook ups it is quite easy to see how in a country with a few nillion there could be such increases as you have mentioned.

quick google search will find that Brazil is actually quite good on hiv diagnosis..65% of all infected people are on anti virals..Its the africans I'd be worried about and as to why our inept government is allowing people infected with nasty diseases into our country in the first place?? so they can infect our citizens..they really do not give a fuck about the people that voted them in..

We just sent an email to the clinic and got tested a week after,so wasnt that long.

We just sent an email to the clinic and got tested a week after,so wasnt that long."

There are non NHS voluntary organisations in Belfast and Derry that do testing on a walk in basis or ring first, with results the same day
