"The books were way better than the movies but you have to take them with a pinch of salt, unfortunately lots didn't and had the unrealistic views of how a dom/sub relationship should be. There are so many better books on the market if that's the kind of thing you want to read "

"From someone who comes from the Bdsm scene, the books where a double edged soward, yea it sent a lot of people our way but it gave them totally unreasonable ideas of what it's all about, it put the idea of bdsm in people's minds but from my point of view it's a story of an abused woman, she's pressured into changing herself to suit his needs rather than learning and growing herself"

"I haven't read it , but I have noticed the influence of this book . Who's read it ? Who's liked it ? Who's hated it ?? ( If you're looking a good read I'd recommend (A Fine Balance , Rohyinton Mistry)" ------ I tried reading the book and couldn't get past the first chapter as I thought that the author was trying to impress rather than actually telling a story A much better book is by a Dublin woman, KATIE COLLINS called CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET? which is based on a real life swingers account of the Dublin swinging scene about 15 years ago An easy to read & all round great story

"I would completely agree with this reply. As someone who has been invoked with BDSM for some time, I tried to read the books to see what all the fuss was about, but didn’t find them particularly well written. That said, she did find an audience that were captivated (no pun intended) by the books, so well done to her. As somebody who enjoys BDSM play, I agree that these books were a double edged sword for the community. It attracted a lot of newbies to the scene, but often with unrealistic and naive expectations, and often these newbies were preyed on by folks who use BDSM to satisfy their personal gratification for rough sex. That said, by attracting newbies to the scene, the books have made those of us who are involved in BDSM be more articulate when chatting with these new folks, taking time to provide more of an insight as to the reality of D/s." Thanks for the input ,

"God-awful, badly written tripe. The story of a 20-something year old virgin (see... unbelievable already lol), meeting an experienced Dom, dabbles a little bit in his world, but ultimately turns the big bad Dom vanilla. By the end of it all they're about as BDSM as any couple who happens to have a few toys and a spare room Sadly, from my point of view the books/films misinformed a generation of mildly curious people, and now very few know the distinction between B&D and S&M. I got random idiots who assumed I'm into pain and humiliation sending me graphic messages simply because I've a few bondage pics on my profile, or that I'm a dominatrix and am open to throwing on a pair of thigh-high boots and whipping them silly without having exchanged more than a handful of messages. Not to mention the self-styled Doms who haven't grasped that a sub-Dom dynamic is a mutually respectful relationship built over time and with trust, and instead use threats of physical harm or indeed self-harm as short-cuts to gaining control. In short, I think the books/films did more damage than good. People view them as a 'how to' rather than works of fiction and don't bother to inform themselves properly. For genuine BDSM folk who haven't already got a partner, or are looking for a new partner, it must be so disheartening dealing with all the misinformed wannabes!" Thanks PD , It did seem to unleash a lot of wannabe's , lol

"Having had a D/s relationship for the last 20 years and long been a participant in the kink scene I can say that these stories are just a shadow of reality. A more accurate book in this genre and true literature is ‘The Story of O’"

"Ack people take the books to literally, it's nothing more than an erotic romance, a dirty book for the girls, nothing more than that" This, but also it validated the fantasies of millions of women. I don't accept the argument that the book is the cause of dim doms, they have always existed. Possibly reports about 50SOG may have attracted males with a sexualized or a domineering view of kink (although I think they are more likely to have been influenced by pornsites aimed at males than badly written female erotica). However I think half of the people in kink like their kink sexualized and domineering and don't see how they own behaviour may be viewed by outsiders.
