"There's no one magic formula that works for everyone. When I receive a message from someone I have had no previous contact with - I firstly check their profile. If nothing there makes me want to know more about the person - I don't read the message and just delete it. If the profile looks like it had some effort put into it, I may read the message [depending on my own criteria having been met in the profile]. If the message has made it obvious the sender has not read or understood my profile, the message gets deleted and the sender gets blocked. If the message is interesting and makes me want to know more - I may reply. Each person has their own criteria so you need to read the profile, see if what you can offer each other matches and send a message based on your observations of those facts.
