....or anyone else who knows for sure

You know the speeding vans that are a plague on the country, someone told me that they can only read your speed if the are parked on the same side of the road as you?? Does anyone know if that's true??

Asking for a friend

Both side of the carriage way and up to five lanes so tearing along tbe dotted line on the out side lane of the M50 can still be nabbed by the van parked on the speed ramp

south side ,

They can only get you on the same side ,there are two cameras ,front and back ,they catch the front and back reg plate ,the only thing they can't catch is motor bikes ,a bike doesn't have a front reg

From the RSA

When you're moving past the back of the van, either coming towards or moving away, the van can monitor that speed."

So vehicles traveling either direction are caught

They can't ,and I know they can't because I service them ,they can't afford to have cameras on both sides ,never once did they say the camera works both ways ,people just assumed it does ,and it works ,if you think you will get fined you will slow down ,and in return it saves the government heaps of money

Than why is it quoted by the RSA themselves?

Have noticed lately that they are now putting up a camera on a tripod outside the van.

Its more a hazard ,in tallaght they always put them in the same place and it never prevents speeding ,people slow down driving to it ,and then speed up as soon as they pass it ,look at the 4 lads that died in Donegal last night ,why is Donegal the most dangerous place to drive

The quality of roads in rural Ireland is shocking at the best of times, and there is plenty of dangerous and careless driving going on all over this country.

The speed vans are a money spinner and it slows people down for that couple of minutes to pass them.

People need to take responsibility for their driving and slow down and pay attention to what's going on around them, not stuck in their phone texting.

And the camera is in the rear of the speed van it catches u traveling in either direction. Confirmed by a Garda just now.

I live with a gard and I work on all government vehicles ,they don't work in both directions ,and the reason why its so dangerous in Donegal is because you can get your car insured from the north under English law and pay only a fraction and hense why lads can buy big engine cars at a young age ,

So now you live with a Garda but it was cause you worked on the van earlier. Have u driven on the roads in Donegal? And insurance from northern Ireland but live in Donegal is the cause of dangerous driving ffs.

The tripod is put up outside the van to set the camera and van in place once checks are done they take it down

And I've have asked 2 Garda this morning and both said the camera is in rear of van and it can catch the cars traveling in either direction.

As for the stats about Donegal yes I'm well aware of the stats but as I said the roads are pretty shit up there. Again most of the roads in the north west are as we don't get the monies spent on our road infrastructure.

But eh what do I know

Ploughing Championships

Watch: 'How many lanes are monitored and is there somebody in there?' - Inside a speed camera van

Margaret Donnelly

20 September 2017 11:30 AM

In camera: A mobile speed van monitors the passing traffic

One very popular stand at the Ploughing this week is the Road Safety Authority's display, where they had a poignant display of every person who has died in a road traffic accident this year to remind visitors of the real people behind road traffic accidents.

The RSA also has a speed camera on display, giving visitors to the Ploughing the opportunity to see exactly what's inside those vans. And there is a man (or woman) inside - it's not just a camera!

VIDEO: Everything you want to know about the new speed camera vans

Key speed van information

Staff at the RSA stand confirmed that the 50 plus speed vans are manned on the inside

Most parked up for between 30 minutes and two hours.

They also confirmed that while the speed vans only detect speeding in cameras at the back of the vans, the cameras can detect if a vehicle comes from either side at excessive speed.

The vans can also work at nighttime - and just because you didn't see a flash does not mean you were not caught!

The cameras have an infrared beam that is able to detect speed and read the number plate of a vehicle.

Staff at the stand also confirmed that the cameras can now detect speeding across five lanes,

They can even detect speeding vehicles on the other side of a dual carriageway.

That's well and good ,I see your very intellectual on the mater ,same here ,now the reason why u can't get done for speeding from the front is because motor bikes don't ,they don't have a reg at the front only the rear ,and its that reason why u can't fine a car and not a bike ,put it to practice ,

Well if that the case every person not wearing a seatbelt could argue the same fact if a motorcyclist doesn't wear one why should they be done?

.....

Speed vans are capable of capturing reg plates and speed in both directions. To say otherwise is simply a lie.

Now where the problem seems to be here is that some think most vans are only equipped with one camera then it is okay to misinform people and tell them they are in the clear. Every speed van in this country is capable of capturing you in both directions if the van has both cameras operating at the time

Yeah I understand your point ,does it hit home with most ,look at those lads last night ,single car crash ,you don't die driving slow ,so who's educating them ,the speed vans don't work ,on average every year around 180 die on our roads ,has the government addressed that ,

There is only so much you can do when it comes to young chaps hammering around country roads. Bring realistic about, the government are useless but the RSA and even the AA are very visible it the media warning people. You can't take the keys off ever boy racer just because it's past midnight. I honestly don't know what the solution is but again the government can't be blamed for gobshites ploughing into walls.

To be honest when I see reports of that type of crash I only feel pity if they have injured an innocent third party.

No the government aren't addressing it but every single person male and female that get behinds the steering wheel of a car takes responsibility forhow they drive I have a two hour commute every day for work and some of the driving I see is disgraceful with no regard for other motorists.

Only recently a guy overtook me on a double white line in icy conditions with an oncoming car I was doing 90 so it wasn't like I was crawling.

The information above is correct the cameras are rear mounted so if u see van from front slow down will only be detected when u pass van

When I started driving that figure was closer to 400 road deaths per year so it has obviously been addressed to a fair extent. Better roads, better vehicles and less drink driving as well as the penalty points system are presumably the reasons.

Were u much over? At least when they bring in the staggered fines will make it fairer. Getting done for a 10 miles over the limit when some are well in excess is annoying.

I got done in 2014 still don't know where the fecker was think he was actually in the hedge cause I didn't pass a van lol

This is correct. When you see the van you may still have plenty of time to slow down and get to the speed limit or under. Only when you ate close and passing do you fall foul of them....so plenty of time to slow in time! Unless your hammering past and deserve it
