I used to think it was cringe and we needed to be more modern.

But then I went and lived in France, and other countries, and I finally got it, I finally understood why Ireland was voted the friendliest country all the time.

And now I see us turning into a typical french/english/US city, its sad. No community, culture, people dont stop to help, people are rude to strangers and what was an honest attempt at a caring system is being phased out for systems that look after rich people, and if you get your home taken away well here is a sleeping bag, just like france.

Absolutely.

I don't like living here anymore and I genuinely fear getting old or getting a long term illness in this country as you are seen as of no value at all unless your paying tax, ie. working.

As soon as you can't work anymore you're cast aside and no one is gonna give a shit.

Yes, you may say that other countries are the same but it wasn't long ago that communities looked out for each other in urban Ireland. Those days are gone. It's everyone for themselves now and it's almost viewed as a sign of weakness to want to help someone with no expectation of anything in return.

And we're developing a very racist attitude these days aswell because of pure ignorance.

We're turning into a country of c**ts

You have to practice what you preach, like being nice to teachers.

Homes don't just get taken away. It's populist noise at it's worst.

I love been Irish... we've a dry wit few get and a steong culture. We've a proud but challenging history. Im proud of how far we've come in recent years tearing off the shackles of Catholicism. Im happy to have reared my children here. Itd not a utopia but also by a long way its not a destopia. We're a good race, in the majority we're decent and kind. I'm a very proud Irish woman

I half agree with you...we have problems with cronyism, greed, materialism and an importation of American culture particularly the letigation and social justice side of things.

I still prefer new Ireland to old Ireland. We are more open minded and tolerant than ever and have a serious injection of talent from all the people coming to work and study from around the world.

If anything our social welfare protection net is too wide and supports and creates a class of work shy people while neglecting those who really need it.

People need to grow up and realise that we don't have to become soft and like the bloody kardashians or any other Americans . We are Irish and have our own identity , humour and way of doing things . If in Rome do as the Romans do. Why continue to lose out national identity bending over constantly conforming . We are Irish. Be proud to be Irish and don't lose our way of doing things .

Lived the myself for 6 years and yes unfortunately I have to agree with alot of what you said...but I also firmly believe media has alot to do with a faster desensitisation of our culture

Love working and living in ireland for the moment every country has its good and bad points but plant are in place to live in a warmer drier country in the future for medical reasons to have a better quality of life when i get older

Wow everyone is so quick talk about the bad things. (I guess that's very Irish to be fair haha). Though the OP asked what we like!

I also love the history and mythology of Ireland. So colourful and full of tales.

We literally lice on magical land. Castles, megalithic structures, portal dolmens, fairy forts etc. Just unreal altogether.

Some of the earliest farmers and astronomers were here on this land.

How Ireland gas always been well versed in the arts especially music. Irish traditional music is just amazing.

The literature from Ireland, poetry etc is unbelievable!!

The friendly people and the sense of community we were always about.

The humour here is second to none really and that's probably due to our long long history.

The land itself is beautiful, so green with amazing rock features and topography.

To be fair a lot of things are changing here and sometimes for the worst as we do lose our culture over time with the way things are now but it's up to us to keep culture alive just as our ancestors did for thousands of years before us through oral tradition. To be honest with all out technology we're in a fantastic position to preserve our culture and heritage rather than complain of the change but do nothing about it.

I love the fact that I'm Irish. I've travelled all over the world but I'd only ever live here. It's not without its faults, but I don't know anywhere where my kids would have grown up in such a broad multi cultural safe society and received such a good education. The Irish have unique characteristics with NZ and Canada coming closest. Feel very proud and lucky to be Irish.

Apart from our resilience and heritage, I find being irish can have a very positive contribution especially when being introduced to other nationalities.

It has definitely helped my with relationships outside of Ireland.

We are considered intelligent and extremely hard workers that can strive in a stressful environment.

We like the craic/news and gossip.

We won't let the truth come in the way of a good story! What's not to like about being irish should be the question

We as a country are very quick to give out about our own country but at the end of the day we are the ones that let it happen and we are the ones that can change it. Stop giving out about our country and find good in what we have become. I’m very proud to be Irish. We can travel to most countries and are very welcome there. There is a lot to be said for that

I think there is alot of romanticising about the way Ireland used to be.

Yes communities may not be quite as closely knit as they used to be, but alot of those same communities used to be quite judgemental ans ostracize those that did not fit in.

We have have a serious issue with Homelessness in this country but I do believe that it was caused by some terrible decision making by those in power and not a lack of caring or concern by the people of the county.

I still love living here. I see so much goodness and kindness everyday amongst our population.

Well said.

It reminds me of the Bill Hicks bit about national pride.

It goes along the lines of, to say your proud to be from the country you happened to be born is basically saying that you're proud your parents fucked there. You didn't really have a whole lot to do with it.

I have to admit in recent years I tend to see the bad aspects of living in Ireland simply because I see people struggling, depression, homelessness and just bad vibes all round. It seems every 2 or 3 weeks someone kills themself here in Waterford alone. In one week last year we had something like 9 suicides.

But you're right in what you said about our heritage. We have amazing history and culture and thanks for reminding me of it.
