A lot of the problem is with kids getting puppies for Christmas and having no right place for them. After a few weeks they are either put into a pound or dumped somewhere.

It's awful how dogs are treated by breeders. They should be jailed.

On the other side of the story there is fraudulent rescue centers making money out of it too.

There's a big rescue center in Kerry which is a huge money making scam.

If you want a great dog then you will probably have to buy.

A great dog is one that matches what you need perfectly. This means out of all the dog breeds only 1 or 2 will match you. If you are very very lucky maybe 10 or 20 dog breeds will match you. But for most of us, its 1 or 2, knowing what matches you is most important.

This country is full of backyard breeders that are no more than small puppy farms, done deal and the like is full of them

A family buy a breeding pair of dogs, usually toy breeds, and breed them continuously

Anywhere there is money involved it will attract all types of scum and always will

You guys aint seen nothing. I have first hand knowledge of the extent of the puppy farms in Ireland. I have been to quite a few of them in my previous job. I could not begin to tell you how big of a problem it is. I once visited a farm where the guy had 350 breeding bitches. It was disgusting. And before you ask yeah I ended up reporting it to the authorities

"I don’t agree Tbh so many full Breeds in rescues also not just mongrels ... in saying that all my dogs have been mongrels and the most loving animals you could find "

You missed my point. I did not say "Buy a dog because it is full breed", i said "Buy the right full breed".

People buying fullbreeds based on looks and not needs is why they end up in homes. The husky the person cant be bothered to walk, the alasation the person cant be bothered to bring in with the family, the terrier that is yappy. Getting a beagle because they like the look of it a hunting dog!

You can get very specific with what you want from a dog. Guard land not people, sheds yes or no, barks yes or no, needs exercise yes or no, human friendly yes or no... and on and on it goes.

Its my opinin that homes should be phased out, home breeders should be made illegal, farms monitored closely. That people should have to fill out forms and be told what breeds they can have due to their needs, and it should say on a dog licence what breeds you can currently have.

Mongrels are great, but they are part of the home breeding problem. Just too many of them.

. The good thing about getting a rescue is you already get to know the personality of the dog as they have been monitored closesy by the rescues Dspca or dogs trust and they try to fit the dog personality into the family life .. my third rescue was fostered for 6 months before we got him and we knew he wasn’t a barker and loved kids etc and the rescue would only let him go to a family with kids. I agree re the husky’s im sick and tired of people who get them and don’t walk them. They need so much excercise
