Why do people bother with it. The bookie always wins.

Ballybrack

Interesting psychology behind why people bet, but its down to people being okay to bet small to win big. Plus withs sports betting the people who know what they're doing make serious money at it.

North Coast

I do get this; but there are people who do win - I opened a free £10 account with sky bet and have taken £200 out and have about £60 credit there today. It’s about risk and maximising/minimising this (Irish or what lol) - it requires huge discipline and much patience (and obviously a little luck and knowing what you’re doing)

But in general yes the bookie always win overall, much like the slot machines that took most of my hard earned money as a teenager

Bet once of twice a year for a bit of fun.

€10 is my max bet.

So not a serious gambler here

Kilkenny, but Dublin is more fun

I don't bet but I do regret missing a great chance a couple of years back.

In the Grand National, there was a horse running at 33:1 with the same name as the daughter and I would have put at least €20 on it, not because I expected it to win but because I'm a sentimental bastard.

It won of course and I would have known about it, except that the granny who's always watching the racing was in the hospital for a minor illness.

The only gambling I do is the odd game of poker. But it is good value for money €10 for a buy in and a game could last hours. Also there is a little more element of control and interaction than betting on other people in sports.

It should be banned, lottery, scratch cards and gambling are a tax on the poor (and keep them poor).

The odd lottery ticket and that's it. My number one rule if I can't afford to lose it don't do it

Really? Surly the shop keeper or the bookie should ask to see a person's bank balance before they let them play?
