I recently went for a STD/STI test and thought I would share my experience - might encourage others to go if they haven't.

Step 1. Phoned GUM clinic in Cork South Infirmary for a free STI checkup and was given a patient number and an appointment for 3 weeks later was told not to pee for 4hrs before appointment.

Step 2. Turned up, gave number and DOB and sat in large waiting room for about 15mins. Then called for a 2 min interview on sexual history and asked to give a urine sample by peeing into small container in the loo. Back to waiting room for about 5mins and then called again to be examined. Was shown into a small room with a bench and asked to pull boxers to my knees and lie back on the bench. Two female staff then took a swab from inside the tip of my penis. (I presume they checked around my genitals for abnormalities at this time too) They then asked me to dress and a minute later a separate nurse came and took a blood sample from my arm. Back to the waiting room for about 10mins and then called to be given a quick result (clear) (not sure if from swab or urine) for signs of any infection. Then I was asked to make another appointment for a week later for blood test results and went home.

Step 3.

A week later I was back for my results (waiting room seemed busier - 20ish peeps) so was waiting nearly 30 mins to be called. Nurse/doc was very methodical in checking name, DOB, patient number and went through pages and pages of results for the different sti tests. Heart skipped a beat for a second when she mention a positive result but immediately went on to explain it was for receiving a hepatius vaccine which I had done a few years ago for travel. And that was the end of the testing and home I went with the knowledge I have no infections detected. (I believe HIV needs another test 3 months later to be clear)

Thoughts:

Thankful to be able to avail of this service.

It's 100% free

STI testing isn't scary or shameful. The nurse that does my appointment is so much fun, we always crack jokes and make inappropriate sexual references. More importantly, testing is always done quickly and staff is always friendly (done tests in various locations in Dublin, before I settled for my favourite one).

Testing every quarter gives piece of mind. Recommend all test in intervals that suit them. For me 3 months between tests work best.

The GMHS on Baggot Street has been my best experience of public STI clinic in Dublin. They offer daytime appointments, so no need to take a day off work or waiting around all day like in James Hospital.

Appointment was at 2pm. Was offered a rapid HIV test (pin prick on your finger, drop of blood into a little kit, negative result as expected!)

Then you give a urine sample, blood sample, swab of penis, throat and bum. Nurse takes blood from arm too. All this done in about 40 mins.

They also ring you up to confirm everything is good, and they also suggested I get a (free) hep b vaccine as I have low natural immunity to it apparently.

Great service, couldn't recommend it enough if you can't afford to go private.

Good post OP. I go for regular sti checks and have attended a few different ones in the north and only good experiences. Apart from Belfast the others have sent a text to inform of clear results and phone if otherwise. Would encourage all to take care of their sexual health. Lilred

was at the same clinic last month and they did all the tests too , great service , had to go back after 2 weeks for blood results but unfortunately my sample was thrown away by mistake, rarely happens , so another sample was taken and a week later they rang me with results , all tests clear , would highly recemend then , very discreet and very professional , will be going back for regular check ups there

Keep in mind though some STIs are either hard to detect (HPV strains) or hard to test for (herpes). Also good to know your own bits and observe for anything unusual, use condoms, make safer choices wherever possible.

We just need better education about sex now we are a multicultural society and are increasingly exposed to greater odds of STD than we were when we were more insular.

What was low risk in Ireland should now be considered medium etc.

Am up North.

Own GP surgery now doing it.

Alot handier for me than travelling as nearest gum clinic is a good bit away.

They are trying to get all the surgeries to offer it.

Very good idea as makes it even easier for people to attend so no excuses!

Was a tad embarassed telling a doc ive known for years how many partners or whatever with the wedding ring on but she is now called “the sex doc” lmao ill got to a diff one for aches and pains haha

Just thought id let people know. Xxx

For anyone based in the Midlands they can attend a clinic on Tuesday evenings in outpatient department of Portlaoise hospital.

It's ran by a great team of very friendly and helpful staff. They wish more people would have regular checks . I attended recently for regular check the nurse said I was the only person who was attending that evening with no symptoms. Waiting time to be seen is around three weeks and if your results are clear they text two weeks later. If not they call
