I enjoy working out but sometimes hard to find the time.

As many seem to be in good shape on this site, would be interested to hear any tips or hints on specific exercises for full body max benefit from people in the know who get results.

And yes I have googled, but would appreciate tips from ordinary folk who don't want to spend hours in the gym.

No easy "legal" short cut, effort in =benefits out

Other than that it would have to be the Ben Johnson school of thought

You can go to the gym all you like, but if you are consuming more calories than you are burning off, you won’t lose weight.

Cutting down the amount of calories you put into your body each day can help you achieve weight loss.

On the flip side, if you eat more calories than you manage to burn off, you will gain weight.

As a general rule of thumb,

calories in/burn off ratio

you can spend hours in the gym and undo all your good work by eating a bag of crisps and a bar of Choclate. As the saying goes abs are made in the kitchen

Thanks for your comments much appreciated, but assuming one is on top of the cal in, body fat percentage etc, I guess I'm more looking for a simple daily routine for ab definition specifically

Unfortunately can’t define just one area of the body especially abs! Last bits of fat to go are always around the stomach!

I find high rep supersets (Lola has me doing them) are beneficial for toning. 15 reps on one body part immediately followed by 15 reps of another body part

Eg 15 x lat pull down followed by 15 shoulder press

15 squats followed by 15 bench press

Obviously there was a diet included. The post is about not exercising every day, my response is that you need to

Difrent ppl difrent approach to losing weight. But personally I think if you are not a professional athletes, you should have day's to recover. It is all about balance between the way you eat ( maybe some one fancy chicken breast 21 times per week) and the way you doing training.

Exercise is the key. If you are into heavy training regimes you can eat almost anything, it doesn't matter how you get the carbs.

If however you want to concentrate on muscle tone then best way is to prep 5 meals with 30grams of protein per meal. I did this for 6 months and you will see the muscle tone in around 3 months. Gym regime: 6 muscle groups, concentrate on two per session with one day rest in between each session.

Time saving tips for ab work....

1. Include full body movement as part of your warm ups.. squats, lunges, burpees, bear walks... basicall anything that engages the core and warms you up.

2. Supersets... either to target the same body part or 2 different ones with 2 exercises one after the other saves a bit if rest time

3 cut out the majority or your rest time...unless you are training muscle strength you really dont need to be spending anytime sitting doing nothing between sets.. do some planks in between.

4. Best plan for a short cut is to have a plan and stick to it dont go in without a workout olanned so you dont idle and waste your time.

You cant spot lose fat but you cam certainly target an area to tome and define if you want your abs to pop a bit you need to build the muscle.. that means adding weight to your ab work you can do 100's of sit ups but you need added weights to grow the muscles, you wouldnt do 50 bicep curls with a 3kg weight..

For faster progress:

1. Have a clear-cut, positive goal that will keep you inspired for the days you don't feel like training versus having a weak uninspiring goal of "I want to lose weight"

2. Food is 80% of the work & If you're borderline "morbidly obese" food is 90% of the work. So, prep your meals most of the time.

3. Weights build lean muscle and up your metabolism so

moderate weights to change your shape.

4. When doing weights, hit the big muscle groups like chest, back and legs primarily. (leg Press, lat pulldown, chest press, etc)

5. Keep showing up. Remember, the difference between a black belt & a white belt in karate is that the black belt kept showing up.

6. Have a training partner so that you'll be more inclined to keep showing up and have someone to push you as well

Looking forward to see the after pics Op!

Both of you look fit to me, I am still a bit far away to you gays. But I will agree that is no easy way to achieve goals. Different targets as we all are different and unique.

Eat

Work out

Have sex

Sleep

Repeat

If that would be easy we would not have over half of nation witht obesity problems.

Looking at the profile pic ya have unless ya wanna go fairly thin I would probably re think in terms of maybe putting on a bit more size all round firstly... Im no PT by any means purely just going from personal experience of starting off at 65kg to now weighing 90+kg...

Train 4-5 times a week is plenty for a natty

4 body groups

Chest

Legs

Rest

Back

Shoulders

Throw arms in with your pushing movements (Bi's with Chest, Tri's with shoulders) and Abs in with Back

For compound lifts keep heavy rep range 6-8, isolations go more so 10-12

In terms of diet keep a structured diet doesnt have to be really by the book just keep it structured

Brekkie, lunch, dinner, after workout meal/small snack and supper... keep carbs to brekkie and after working out... eat veggies or salad with other meals... meats being lean beef, fish, chicken, turkey... drink plenty of water

Other than that just GIVE IT TIME... results will come no doubt !!

4 weeks til you see a change, 8 for friends and family and 12 for everyone else

Thanks to you all for taking the time to share your informative advice. Gives me a few things to think about. I'm figuring I need to up my protein intake however it's difficult for me as I eat very limited animal protein, red meat especially. Seems like there's a big commitment involved to build that muscle, which is fine, depends how far one wants to take it I guess. Cheers all

Consistency is key as well.

If you can only do a little exercise a week do it every wk.

And diet is king. No need to starve but eat good healthy stuff.

Sleep I find is also crucial. You'll have energy to to that hard gym session and you won't be craving shit food

You may not become ripped but it will make a difference and you will feel great.

So much half right / half wrong here...

1) fat around the belly isn’t the last to go - targeting works because the body is lazy and so will use the nearest fat deposit for fuel providing you’re in aerobic exercise phase (over 3 minutes as a rule of thumb). So a core class - like les mills cx - will do wonders for the stomach via targeting it in aerobic phase.

2) supersets aren’t just banging two exercises together - a superset has to work the agonist and the antagonist in turn. So a set of hammer curls followed by a set of tricep extensions IS a superset, a set of squats followed by a set of bench presses isn’t.

Toning is a function of reducing body fat (diet) to show the underlying muscle. High rep work will certainly burn calories but it’s nowhere near the best way to grow the muscle that is then shown. Eccentric phase training or German volume training would be far more developing of muscle to show.

For the OP - ask a PT for a hypertrophy program that focuses on 3 primaries and assists with progressive overload. Then do the hard yards and enjoy.

---------------------

In principle, you're right...

However counting calories is bloody boring as a means to losing weight If you want to lose weight, you don't want to be measuring serving sizes, etc and looking at every meal and piece of food as containing "X' "Y" or "Z" calories as it's a monotonous and soul destroying way to lose weight. Besides, most people don't have a clue about serving sizes and don't want to know as that means they have to be more accountable. A sad truth but writing from experience

It's better to look at foods that will nourish your body, make you feel healthier & that you should eat more of and then there's junk or processed foods that you eat occasionally as an earned "treat" towards the end of the week

I give nutritional advise myself and will always say that "Food is 80% of the work and if you're borderline type 2 diabetic, food is then 90% of the work"

So, a good pragmatic approach to healthy eating is needed if you're serious about getting results
