Im almost finished the handmaid's tail, if any of you have read you'll know its damn right fecking depressing to say the least.. Any suggestions of a somthing a little more light hearted?

Read hitchhikers excellent as for princess bride I'll check it out, but I think I have enough of them in life

Catch 22 has some really laugh out loud parts but still pretty depressing over all.

Jon Ronsons books are pretty light amd entertaining too

I'm reading Mythos by Stephen Fry at the moment and it is fantastic. Very interesting and imbued with a lot of humour as would be expected given the author.

Yeah I loved it - could be seen as a bit of a 'piss-take' on regular 'literature' but the premise is amazing - and anything that has a Dodo in has to be cool, doesn't it?

The other books in the series are worth the read too :

"Lost in a Good Book"

"Well of Lost Plots"

"Something Rotten"

It is without a doubt one of the finest novels ever written about a distopian future. Well written characters and very believeable plots. Theres a reason why a book written in the 80s still resonates now. You've just read a modern masterpiece.

Highly recommend "Notes to Self" by Emile Pine. A debut novel of an Irish Author. Brilliant read

For a fantasy book id have to recommend 'the name of the wind'. It's an excellent book really well written and absorbing. For epics go for something by Brandon Sanderson. Really good author and slightly less depressing

The santus trilogy by simon toyne. I couldnt put these my kindle down when reading.

Conspiracy theories with a religious slant. Had me on the edge of my seat.

Good thread OP, some good recommendations above that I'll check out, thanks. I've a few to add that might seem odd but I started reading them having seen posts about them on another site and wasn't disappointed.

If you like crime fiction = The Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbo is great. Another very popular Scandi author is Camila Lackberg who writes the Erica Falck/Patrick Hedstrom series.The acknowledged masters of Scandi 'police procedurals' genre Maj Sjowal and Per Wahloo, wrote the "Martin Beck" series of books in the late 60's -pre mobile phones pre-PC, pre Internet stuff obviously, really good mysteries, well written characters. I think you can buy the series very cheaply on Kindle too.

Historical fiction, CJ Sansoms's "Matthew Shardlake" is hard to beat.Susanna Gregory's "Thomas Challoner" series is good as are the "John Shakespeare" series by Rory Clements.

For non fiction and a good laugh, I read Bill Bryson's books. Great observational humour. His book on his trip to Australia was laugh out loud at times.

Hope some of you try these out and enjoy them.

Oh I do realise it's an excellent read, I'm being harassed at the moment by my daughter to read the skullduggery plesant series, great laugh apparently if your a big kid, cheers looking forward to exploring lot of those recommendations
