"pull ease save us the theatrics. Or maybe don't. Because Casey is brave enough to point out the reality of traveller "culture " he will no doubt go down in a hail of liberal abuse which agrees there should be free speech provided your speech agrees with liberal thought....." He and you can express any ideas you want just dont try to speak for "most people" so far its 2 to 1. Unless people with these views are afraid to say it.. I wonder why that would be

"The most entitled group in Irish society. A vastly disproportionate number in prison compared to "settled" people. It isn't a coincidence there is a shared perception of travellers. I'm sure there are some that buck the trend but the vast majority are a drain on society. The recent issue with stables being demanded to move into new homes is nothing short of madness. The default "can't tar them all with one brush" tends to identify a small number of exceptions as the majority. Will Casey get my vote ? No , he won't but I agree with him 100% on that. He's dead right when it comes to the house prices. I've worked in a few different industries over the years and bar none the worst experiences in each were with travellers. I don't see why they are entitled to special treatment. They want much more from society than they provide for it. Fair play to Casey on what he said. It doesn't add or take away from any of his other positions for me. As a singular issue I couldn't agree with him more. " very well said!

I hope you're not suggesting that bringing belonging to any group makes a person guilty of whatever you believe the majority of that group to be guilty of. That's just laziness of thought, not to mention ignorance. I'm kinda surprised at you being one of the people generalising given your constant outbursts against Donald Trump for his generalised comments about various minorities.

But if you ghettoize a community and treat them like second-class citizens, thats going to create the environment for these issues to flourish. Irish example, Ballymun flats. Was that because Dubliners are feral animals? Or was it because they were treated as an afterthought as best, or more accurately like the shit you'd find on your shoe?"

"May I just list a few things here at this point. I've lived in Dublin for the last 34 years. . In that time I've had two flats and one house broken into with various valuables taken in each case. I've had one car stolen and burned. I've had two other cars broken into and the radio stolen from one, some bits and bobs taken from the boot of the other. The locks were badly damaged on both. I've had a bicycle nicked as well. . Now.. The two lads who broke into one of my flats were caught about an hour later breaking into another house.. Both were from Dublin. Neither were travellers. . The guy who stole the car that ended up on a bonfire was from Dublin... Not a traveller either. . The gang that must recently broke into my house were caught in possession of some of my stuff a week later were from Kildare... None of them were travellers. . Oh, and a guy who was caught on CCTV breaking into one of my cars was from Galway and wasn't a traveller. . Can I hear some of the people generalising about travellers say that all non travellers are guilty of these crimes now as well please? " Jesus u are very unlucky to have had that many crimes committed against u get two large dogs like i have and watch somebody climb over my high gate its great fun to watch lol i also have it on cctv

In primary school with a couple of families. Most of the traveller kids were great craic. Some were dicks, standard enough. I was pals with one. Proper fun. Kind. Sound out. Teachers and parents treated him like shite, to the point that it was obvious to a snot nosed pup such as my 6 year old self. Hung himself the summer before secondary school. Im not sure how respectful he was. Promise you he was decent

"He’s right. It’s refreshing to hear some truths after all the strategic and insincere PC bullshit we have to put up with. The travelers have a sense of entitlement that the taxpayers and government should or be providing everything for them. I have no time for them. Speaking of travelers how are so many Eastern Europeans and Middle East migrants are coming here. Enough now by far. Irexit is way to go and stop this avalanche of uncontrolled immigration. I have to laugh when I hear people talking about the way crime is rife in Dublin these days. Its sterile compared to the eighties, especially if you were living in flatland.

Political Correctness is an attempt to avoid language or actions that insult or marginalize groups that are socially disadvantaged. So not being a dick, basically. #Metoo is easy to dismiss when its reduced to a hashtag. What its actually about is bringing to light all these forms of sexual assault that so many women experience. Don't see a problem with that. Im not getting into Irexit with you, or anyone. But why are you ok with the normans coming over here, but not those fabulous magyars, for example? "Couple of points. I find Michael McCarthy complaining about others using generalisations a bit rich considering his first response to my post was to accuse those who agreed with Peter Casey on this point of been Nazi sympathisers. Pot kettle black much? Secondly, I have no intention of voting for Peter Casey. Hes an idiot. It just happens that in the same way a stopped clock is right twice a day, he hits on one that is worth saying but everyone is shit scared of saying it. When I was a small child, a "tinker woman" used to call to my house every Saturday morning. My mother and she would chat about family and the world in general for 10 minutes at the door before my mother would go to the kitchen and give out a bottle of milk or eggs or some such item. She explained that my grandmother used to do the same with the womans mother. It had gone on for generations. The reason they were called tinkers was because up to that time they travelled around repairing tin pots and other items. Hence tinkers. It wasnt a pejorative terms back then. It wasnt a very positive term either but back in the 1970s there were lots of terms used by lots of people that would not be used now. As such this distinct group of people had a very particular role in society and had done for generations. They were an integral part of a dirt poor society and were accepted for that. Every "settled" person knew a travller family by first name. What then happened in the 1970s was the welfare state and car insurance scams. As the EEC brought less poverty, the disposable nature of society came to the fore and the connection was lost. The travelling community are nothing if not adaptable and when one source of income dried up they found new ones. Its a great pity that they didnt manage to get involved in larger scale recycling back then because it was an area they had a skill at and we would we having a far different conversation now about traveller culture. The notion that they are reliant on the state for the entire of their income is a completely new one. the woman who called to my mother never had that thought. She provided for her family as best she could in a tough world. Similarly the young traveller women who walk around wearing next to nothing didn't exist up to the early 90s. It is a completely novel creation of modern times. Therefore the notion that "society" owes them a living or has to accept all they do is ignorant and wrong. Every member of a society needs to contribute according to their ability and where they need a helping hand they get it. But the lack of ambition for travellers and among travellers is appalling and a waste of their talent. The most we expect from young travellers is that they might get as far as a junior cert and then go on the dole. Their mortality rate, their health mental and physical is appalling. They have completely become disengaged from the settled community and all that happened in 40 years. It happened in my view because they got anointed with a special status that encourages a them and us mentality. There is nothing special about been born into an impoverished state where there is no expectation from your family or community that you will improve yourself. There is no expectation that you will work or contribute to society. You are brought up to see the state as a hand that gives and car insurance as a way to make a few pound. This is a universal attitude. And the standard response of the likes of Pavee point when a scumbag traveller does something beyond horror such as assaulting an elderly person in their home as "dont paint all travellers with this" is a cop out. We arent painting all travellers with it. But there is a significant number of members of that community who have grown up with an attitude that the settled community is there to be used and abused. And while that attitude is allowed to go unchecked that separation between settled and traveller will grow and grow as it has for 40 years and will ultimately need to conflict. " bravo sir.

Theres not an awful lot in the two posts and its fairly obvious that you were equating my comment about what Peter Casey said with the extermination of Jews.... " You used the expression 'lots of people ". I used the same expression. It is not a generalisation in either case. Kindly point out my generalisation

"Peruser, You are rather agreeing with Peter Casey there. As far as I can see the purpose of the special status was to encourage the preservation of their "culture". I keep putting this in parenethesis because Im sorry but spending 10 grand on a communion day that involves horse drawn crystal carriages, dresses that sexualise 7 year olds and 12 year olds wearing less than prostitutes is not culture. Its consumerism gone ballistic. The agrarian society where everyone but a handful were uneducated and dirt poor and the travellers were just a bit more dirt poor is gone. Id love to see what part of this unique ethnic culture we are supposed to be preserving? The cooked breakfast at 10 am fed to universally obese men by women who are obliged to cook for them? It needs a new purpose not reinforcing a world thats gone. " Tom firstly I apologise O disagree with you but I did make a throw away comment earlier in the thread directed towsrds Casey not you in relation to the Holocost and Muslims if you thought I ment you my bad. I have worked with Traveller groups and yes there are some that fit the steriotypes like all walks of lifebut really many the vast majority I have dealt are the very same as the rest of us. They are funny, care deeply about their families and were very grateful for the help and support they recieved. I do think that you have a sensationalised view of travellers.

"I don't think I've ever seen so much sweeping generalisation in one thread before. Is there exceptions to the generalisations ? Yes. Are the generalisations more true than false ? Which of them do you the opposite to what has been claimed would be a more accurate description of objective reakity ? Generalisations of any kind are wrong. Should a minority group be given special treatment over the general population? And if so why ? What is it that they're entitled to that what you call "the general population" in the same position aren't entitled to? A half acre paddock with 2 stables for each house built in tipp at a cost of 1.7 million for 5 houses Yeah... Except thats not actually true. A large family has lived on a site in Tipp for 40 years. They are being moved into houses by the council and the family has agreed, but always said they needed grazing land for their horses. Never requested stables, said theyd build them themselves. But the council never provided the grazing land and so they don't want to move. Theyve said theyd happily rent the grazing land but couldn't afford to buy it. They have said they don't want houses going to waste and so theyve requested the council use it for social housing." After reading an article written by tipp county council it stated they are looking for land and 2 stables for each house not that they will build them themselves i tbink it's important to have the correct facts before u comment

Im not sure how respectful he was. Promise you he was decent" Suicide at any age is tragic but especially so when it involves a child. Yes there may be valid negative bias towards the travelers, but I doubt this is the cause of the recognised higher rate of suicide in the traveling community. It is a vicious and brutal culture where woman and children are routinely beaten and boys and young men in particular would have no easy way to articulate any weakness or insecurity. This lack of family particularly father- son support or if needed access to mental health support and not discrimination against the travelers is most likely cause of high male suicide in the travelers. Yes it is not always right to generalize but my recurrent experience of the vast majority of them is that they are no good. I wish this was not the case.

"I know he did....and be killed Russians/poles and countless others two...the second point why use the Jewish people in this debate when we are very good at Israel / Jew bashing in this country..." Yeah but it was Jews, Romani and black people that were considered "enemies of the race-based state" as per the Nuremberg laws. And it was largely the firt two groups who were the targets of industrial genocide. Considering the similar treatment of the jewish and gypsy people throughout history, I think its an apt analogy on Mr McCarthy's part. Agree there's latent anti-Semitism.... But Id disagree that criticism of Israel and its actions is anti-Semitic.

Bias is, by dictionary flipping definition, prejudice. And my point has always been that if you treat a community like dirt, you brutalise them, you treat them as less than human, then you'll get individuals that behave accordingly. And using that resulting behaviour as an excuse to further marginalise them is from the same playbook as every opressive regime that has made use of cultural scapegoats. "I don't think I've ever seen so much sweeping generalisation in one thread before. " Went to school with a load of traveller lads. Went to the same youth club, boxing club, discos etc etc have family married to travellers. Yet there's a higher percentage of travellers I wouldn't trust than in the settled community. As for special privileges et al they should be earned not handed out carte blanche. I mostly agree with the op on this. "I'll tell you what... Since Peter Casey is supposedly speaking for some sort of silent majority, or at least substantial minority, let's see how many votes his extreme views get him. Reading through this thread you'd expect at least 70%. Oh no wait, the man on 70% said his comments were despicable. Votes aside, do you honestly believe that anyone who doesn't want to work or contribute to society deserves to supported by that society? 50%? No, I don't think so. Will be get 20%? Not a chance in hell. If he gets 5% I'll consider it a miracle. Guess what lads, he's not speaking for very many people at all it would seem. You may have a mind narrow enough to accept that if you know some travellers that don't work then none of them must work. I know otherwise. In fact if you were listening to the debate about this on the radio earlier you'd have heard some who actually work for a living. Who knew that not every traveller fits your classification? " Your 100% correct, how dare those people generalise about the majority of our hard working, honast "TAX PAYING" travelling community.. Shame on you

You can treat them better, give them special status, give them everything they want. They will take and take and complain and complain and demand more. You can do everything for them and then they will rob or kill you given half a chance. They are no good. I am sure Orbán is not too sorry to see his gypsy population upping sticks in their thousands and coming here. Thanks EU. If I could I would send them all back tomorrow with a random selection of own travelers thrown in for good measure. They bring chaos and crime wherever they go. How Casey can criticize Travellers for not paying taxes - whilst the gov.and legal system allow US multinationals and Vulture Funds to pay virtually nothing - marks this guy out for what he is. A fifth-rate Michael O'Leary swimming in neo-liberal, neo-facist dogma, who has distorted the facts around these news stories about the housing and who resorts to inflammatory statements about disenfranchised people who don't really have a voice in the public realm. Travellers make up less than 1% of the population (this can be expanded if you want to include Roma), 80% of whom are illiterate. True, they can register to vote (though illiteracy stops lots of them doing this) if no fixed abode. So you are right there. But even still, would their voting turnout count for much ? Nah.

But 40,000 people (how many would be of voting age and eligible/arsed to vote ?) is still just 1% of the population. Those numbers aren't going to influence a Presidential election ffs and Casey knows he can say what he likes about them because there's no political blowback.

" Generalisations of any kind are wrong. " 1. "Generalisations of any kind are wrong" is a generalisation so if you are correct it is a paradox that proves you wrong. I would agree people can make statements where certain generalisations can be made by using emotion rather than fact. That can happen either side of the political spectrum to use politics as a spectrum. I specifically said I was sure there was travellers that bucked the trend so in that statement is proof I don't think every traveller is the same. The numbers are there for all to see regarding prison population/unemployment in the traveller community. Yes , I absolutely have a huge issue with Trump when as the POTUS he deals in rhetoric not backed by evidence. Are there people within the communities he attacks guilty of the acts he says they are you'd be hard pressed to say there isn't examples of such behaviour. The trouble is false equivalence. I base what I have said on statistics as opposed to using hatred of a particular group for political gain. Comparing the majority to the minority of two generalisations is philosophically dishonest. Yes. I do find myself on the "left" when I assess my own views but I'm not into identity politics. I try to assess each situation as best I can and in that form my own opinion . Eh, no, it's not and that's a silly statement. Right, I've punt from all of that... You use the prison population to determine that the traveller community is a problem. Hmmm, do you do the same thing in the US which you talk about so much? The prison population in the US is dominated by African Americans. More black people are in prison for serious crimes than any other group. More black people have been convicted of murder and more black people have been executed than any other group. Does this mean that black people are a burden on society? Hmm...

Thats a bit of a generalisation that the majority hate travelers.....what is wrong with them having to go buy the law of the land that the rest of us have to go by which most of us do,how does that make us racist.

I didn't say the majority hate them. I hope the majority dont. I think that the laws of the land can be unfair to to the travelling community. And some others have alluded to how structural inequality can push memebers of a community into criminality. But no, I dont think travellers shouldn't abide by laws. Thinking they should abide by laws doesnt make someone racist. Calling them vermin and not like us, that they dont deserve to be treated like us is racist.

"Peter Casey is a bigoted twat. Like a lot of posters on this thread. His comments not only on the travellers but on a wide range of topics are nonsensical. He's a fantisist at best. You can't tar everyone with the same brush. There's good and bad in every walk of life. I was brought up to treat everyone on face value and that's how I bring up my own children. So far so good they are well rounded young men . The thought that they or anyone would treat someone with the hatred shown on this thread has saddened me, but... has shown me a different side to a lot of people. I guess you can't fix stupid. " Generalisations of any kind are wrong. 1. I'll listen to ooinions from anyone and commend you on having your own thoughts on this regardless of our differences on the subject. Thread took off after I was last online so at this time of the night I shall say goodnight ! Eh what? To say that generalisations are wrong is a generalisation? Eh, no, it's not and that's a silly statement. Right, I've punt from all of that... You use the prison population to determine that the traveller community is a problem. Hmmm, do you do the same thing in the US which you talk about so much? The prison population in the US is dominated by African Americans. More black people are in prison for serious crimes than any other group. More black people have been convicted of murder and more black people have been executed than any other group. Does this mean that black people are a burden on society? Hmm... " Wow. You really haven't a notion. Not a notion how to compare statistics and analyse them. There is a lot more nuance in the American prison system than here. Just to break it down for you. Travellers represent about 0.6% of the population in Ireland and about 10% of the male prison population and about 22% of the female prison population. The black population in America is around 13%/14% of the population and represents about 38% of the prison population. Is there problems with crime in black communities more than white in general ? Yes, I would say there is and many black people will tell you just that. There is also systematic racism within the American system. It's easy to see how shit black people are treated by some cops in the u .s and how the cops get away with what they do contrary to the evidence against them. The numbers you are seemingly saying are comparable are just not. There is a huge disparity . The vitriol against other races is just one of the reasons Trump rose to power. As I said earlier in the thread I won't be voting for Casey in the election. I just happen to agree with him in this scenario . It is possible to agree with someone on a topic without being in their back pocket.

"My point when I started this thread was that Casey had hit on a point that is of concern to people in Ireland. This post shows extremes on both sides of the argument, from those who are openly rascist to those who accused those calling out this special treatment of travellers as daft of wanting to exterminate travellers like Hitler. Like all extremes, its nonsense. The point remains that this raised lots of opinion. The thread will be closed shortly because its full. You dont get that kind of reaction if everyone agrees 100% with each other. If it did, my post would have gotten no comments and would have disappeared. But I'll make my point again. If you look at ANY news outlet in Ireland right now, you would think that there is 100% agreement that travellers are a distinct ethnic minority and all we can do is agree with that. Thats not true. This thread proves it. And if we simply ignore it, the extreme views on either side will just larger and larger. Most decent people want to improve the lot of every citizen by improving everyones opportunity. Lots of us dont believe that giving one disadvantaged group a nonsense label and no hope of improving their status is the way to go about it. " Yeah but they are a distinct ethnic minority. You saying they're not doesnt change that. And regardless if they are or not, efforts should be made to improve their situation. Lack of educational opportunities for transient communities would be one of the simplest. It happens in North Africa with the berbers, it could be done here with a bit of good will and gumption.

As I've said before you can't tar everyone with the same brush. I've been effected by the actions of a traveller but I can't blame other members of the travelling community. To me thst doesn't make sense. X
