I can't believe on today's Business Post a poll has Higgins at 67% and his next rival Gallagher at 15 %.

Higgins said 7 years ago if he got elected he would not run the next time round.

Can't say I have much time for a man with no word , plus is he too old for the job.

Would our Island benifit more from a younger , fresher , enthusiastic guy ??

I think it's a disgrace if Higgins gets in agsin.. we need a new younger President and hopefully a woman this time round

We definitely need a change, preferably someone, younger, taller, photogenic, a communicator that can represent this diversified great nation internationally. Be interesting to see how this race develops. My current position is that I don't want the current incumbent or a shinner.

Yes younger blood this time plus have good kabiler of candidates this time around.

I mean if you have someone in mind that you think is suitable and the standout Candidate, whi happens to be a women great but not I dont see why gender should be important

Traditionally FF, FG and Labour would run candidates. FF and FG are officially supporting Higgins as they didn't want to waste money ahead of the GE.

Sean Gallagher was an unofficial FF candidate last time and same this time, while Gavin Duffy is pretty much unofficial FG.

Gallagher is a moron. He demonstrated this when he shat his pants last time the moment an awkward question was put to him. He would have been a walking embarrassment as a president and it's scary the clown got so close.

He ran on a creating jobs agenda but having failed he has done nothing whatever in the past seven years to do anything other than sue Rte . He's earned more public money doing that than Michael D was paid.

If he was so determined to create jobs why didnt he run for the Dail? Why didnt he do anything in fact other than cry about how unfair the world is?

The other candidates are nominated only because county councillors like their 10 seconds in the sun. Otherwise we wouldn't be wasting money on an unbackable contest.

Interesting given the ageism in this thread. The mrbi poll in the paper said 75% of 18 to 35 year olds will vote for him. it's the 35 to 50s that give him lower at 63%.

Michael D thankfully will walk this because most people recognise quality when they see it and ignore dumb statements like "we need younger "

We need the best candidate whoever that might be. Simple as

Don't you think that a basic requirement for a president be that she be sane? She believes the state were complicit in Veronica Guerin murder. Veronica Guerins brother called her out on that insane comment and she was too cowardly to face him in the Council Chamber to be nominated. She is the original Social Justice Warrior.
