A date is a softer way of classifying it.

Swinging is meant to be whatever the participants wants it to be. It can still include a build up and also be NSA.

Not trying to get into a debate but this lifestyle isn’t a one size fits all scenario (no pun intended).

The OP asked whether the build up is important for readers and I was articulating that, for us, it’s extremely important.

Everyone is different and that is our opinion

As was said we all swing different in my opinion fab kik etc can go on too long and take over your life i do not need to see lots of pics and have endless texts loved swinging 20 years ago when it was keys in a bowl or looking up adds on buy and sell maybe i am too old now for this site lol

I don't like endless texting or Kik, so for me introductions, a few pics, and agreeing on the meeting place...and a good chat at the meet. Then decide if we're a match, and what to do next. It's the meet that decides it for me, as texting and pics often give a different story.

I think that there needs to an acknowledgement of the contrast between BS back and forth, and constructive and erotic mental foreplay.

We have zero time for the ping style of chat. In fact, we don’t generally respond to the hi, what’s up messages.

I’m more referring to setting aside some time in advance of a date in which the couple or SM can get comfy for a dedicated and fun chat. Open some wine and brag the ice.

I like the build up. But not excessive messaging.

Flirty and fun. Tempting pictures not showing everything but teasing.

As said earlier it breaks the ice faster especially for just play dates, skipping the social pre amble.
