If using as base for a touring holiday much to see around East Galway...?

Reckon Galway City Aprox 45 min drive...

You're in a bit of a no mans land there op. Bad roads in all directions.Not a lot to see or do within an hour of there. Not an ideal base but you're within an hour of the city or some nice parts of mayo. Definitely bring a sat nav!

Personally I'd do some of the wild Atlantic way. The roscommon route of the shannon doesn't have near as much scenic beauty...you'll have only about 3/4 stop offs that I can think of and it gets quite samey. If you're a rivers and waterways guy you'd need to hire a boat to see it properly.

Thanks... Fully aware what connemara and Burren coast has to offer... As you said that part of Midlands doesn't really have a lot to offer...

Past athlone a few times... Gather not really a touristy town

It is but it's quite small. I mean you'll have it all seen in a couple of hours and imo it wouldn't be worth that drive for what it has to offer. Now that's just me talking but others would probably disagree.
