See Cork gaa have reversed decision to stage benefit soccer match at Cork stadium for local ex soccer player who died recently of cancer.. Liam Miller....

Wonder how folks in Tyrone and omagh are feeling when after the omagh bomb tradegy the local soccer club (now defunct) arranged a number of prestigious friendlies against top Premier sides (think Chelsea and Liverpool may have been others) seekedto play these games at at local gaa stadium(20000 capacity) to raise funds for victims families... Request refused had to play at local soccer stadium (6000 if that)

Should the gaa be more open to "foreign sports" being played in their stadiums in special circumstances?

You need to check your facts, Cork GAA didnt make the call, it was Croke Park and central council.

It was totally different times then.

Hosting them games could have resulted in revenge attacks and more lives lost.

You cannot compare these two situations.

For the record say if tuam celtic or dynamo blues qualified for the fai Cup went on the mother of all giant killing Cup runs reached the final, won it and qualified for Europe...

Would they not want to play in tuam and would local gaa allow them to use their better stadium

Would the English or Welsh FA.allow Wembley or the millennium stadium in Cardiff to host a gaa match if there was a lot of Irish people died or injured in England. All gaa people in Ireland are in favour of the game being played in the stadium so i think it should be let go and let the Millar family alone and away from all the negative publicity..i myself am traveling to cork to attend the game in respect to a lovely genuine guy.

Apologies for delay in replying.. Battery on de vice died..

Original point was why omagh games not being played at bigger gaa stadium.. But as pointed out other factors evidently taken into consideration..

The fact that approach made to play the Miller benefit game at Cork gaa and not turner's x.. Shows the esteem in which Miller is held a larger crowd than the 12000 capacity turner's x can be expected and only Cork gaa have those facilities.

The millennium and Wembley would stage gaa games... Because they are there for money to be made.. In fact think gaa has been played at Wembley in 40s or 50s.

I just wonder Wether when circumstances apply the gaa should open up their stadiums...

If Cork City did well in Europe and ended up drawing a top Premier or Barcelona or Real Madrid.. Would they cash in by setting high admission for limited capacity at turner's x.... Be accused of selling out and move game to arriva in Dublin... Or to keep game in Cork and play at the bigger capacity Cork gaa..

Tell the Soccer chiefs to get their own house in order before being jealous of a sucessful organisation.

1 very basic problem with that is pitch size. Minimum gaa size pitch is quite a bit larger than max size football pitch.

Mathematically football pitces fit inside gaa pitces.

Gaa pitches do not fit inside football pitches.

It was Croke park who refused the game originally. "Rules"

Cork county board were in general agreement.

Eventually after the meeting at the weekend croke park found a solution.

Times are very different I remember Omagh very well and for reasons on both sides it would cause problems.

But times have changed.

Turners cross holds just over 7000 and was sold out straight away.

It's been a PR disaster for the GAA. yes they've done much good over the years.

I know, I've given loads of my time helping and coaching.

But as ticket prices go up and tv rights are sold....kids no longer free to ulster championship matches...

But we all need to share our resources and work together.

I'd love every sport to have its own massive stadium but the figures don't add up.

Oh and yes Wembley has welcomed GAA games in the past. My father played there! Early 60s I think.

Conversations digress and take natural tangents. My comment was as I quoted your post a reply to why GAA isn't played in Turners Cross or the Aviva.

Choose to be willfully ignorant or take part in the discusssion like an adult.

I'm not parania I referee loads of games for the gaa here in this county but how it took so long for them to change venue is beyond ridiculous should have been straight away especially as he played underage football and hurling for his school..

Galway United have played European matches in GAA pitches previously in the 80s!

Not sure how they got around the loophole but they did

I played for Tuam Celtic(was never a Blues fan)

Cork GAA is a 1 person thing.

Sport is sport.

Charity is charity.

What's all the fuss,it's only a field.

If I'm not mistaken,international soccer player's played in Tuam Stadium in the '70's....mind you.,1 half soccer, the other Gaelic...for charity like!!!

Build a bridge and get over it ffs.

Galway United have played European matches in GAA

pitches previously in the 80s!

Are some gaa pitches council owned and owned by gaa.. Hence Galway... If history correct think turner's x was a gaa ground originally....

Turners Cross wasnt a GAA ground but the old Cork football ground Flower Lodge is now Pairc Ui Rinn

Sure Bohemians played on Jones Road on the now Croke Park site for years before the GAA bought it
