Would text speak put you off meeting someone or just general bad spelling and grammar?

Dis instead of this!

Dat instead of that!

Is the English language being diluted and dumbed down because of people's laziness to spell properly?

Yep poor spelling and grammar indicates a lack of effort. Reread a message before you send it. That's all it takes. To much like hard work to try and figure it out

Yes... and I will hold my hand up to say that I have been caught by predictive text from time to time. But bad grammar and spelling, along with text speak over a certain age is a massive turn off

Some of the comments are so stupidly funny. Watched a YouTube clip recently where a guy was being asked why hadn't he paid child support in 2 years. His answer: "because i was dead, i got shot and i was dead".

We all do it every so often, in a rush or whatever, but to do it day in day out is annoying.

Anyone 30 or over should have normal english spelling and basic grasp of grammar.

Also the "lol" at the end of every message or sentence. In other words, ive nothing else to say so ill fill the awkwardness with LOL.

I just about dealt with it when texting first started (shit, showing my age!) as it was a short way of typing longer words/phrases.

But with predictive text, it's actually harder to spel lik dis, as you have to specifically type the incorrect wording.

Lol when there is something to lol about is grand but to use it to end almost every message or sentence is a pet hate of mine. If someone ever wrote a book purely on text speak and stupid English id actually buy it to drive myself mad, "lol"

Bad spelling would not put us off, as there are a multitude of reasons as to why a person would have bad grammar and spelling - poor education & dyslexia for example.

Text speak is pure laziness in my opinion (Mr here)

If they are that lazy in writing a message, I can only imagine how lazy they would be in the bedroom...

I know this sounds stupid but when someone uses text speak to me I automatically assume they're stoners and take tablets with alcohol and live for parties. The only people I see texting like that are people like the ones I just described.

Well if you think about it they are.

If bad spelling is a turn off for someone - that first text is the test, if the spelling is shit they won’t “get the ride”

I totally agree with text speak.

I'm dyslexic and as a kid struggled with writing and spelling/grammar but with a lot of effort my spelling/grammar is no worse than the average person OK my handwriting is still shocking but who writes essays anymore and spell check helps too.

A lot of people just blame dyslexia and don't try and tackle it especially with phones having predictive text and spell check built in there's very little excuse.

A bit of a turn off to be honest . I have often had to ask what does that mean a few times when chatting to one guy. I don't think it is laziness,i think it is just different times and generation. I am gonna take a wild guess it is most possibly a younger person who is messaging you ?

It used to bother me, but then I got the hell over myself.

Once the message is clear and the conversation is flowing I'm happy. If I have to seek clarification more than a few times on what has been said I do lose interest, mind. Communication is the important bit, not how things are spelt.

"Hi how r u" will, however, always be met with silence. I have some standards

One line messages with txtspk are pointless, other than that as long as there is conversation (like I said) and it's flowing (like I said), then it's fine. So no, not confusing at all.

Interesting thread. The language is always evolving with new words being added constantly. I don't mind if someone makes an error in spelling something but deliberately misspelling words throughout converdation is slightly grating.

Articulation is not to be confused with intelligence but quite often the reliance on "txt speak" would seem to me to indicate rebelliousness against the idea of having to conduct ourselves in the correct form of the language.

Reading some material here or other internet forums is probably like watching a blind panda bash his oaws against a keyboard.

Ultimately it is up to each person how they conduct themselves online. As we tend to make judgements based on optics they must be willing to accept the consequences if someone is less interested in them because of how they converse online.
