Do you do anything altruistic day to day/week to week ?

I try help out those less fortunate than I as best I can be it buying a pair of new socks/cup of coffee/sandwich for the homeless...I'll give money to but try to go to an effort to do something in particular so someone who's.homeless not everyone who walks past them doesn't neccessarily look down on them.

Charity wise I'm not fond of people cold calling to my door for donations. Lately I find myself trying to help out when I can with the likes of local gofundme pages when people have massive impending medical bills for treatment abroad etc.

This isn't a go me post .. just a post what else do people do on a regular/semi-regular basis to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

It's nice to be.nice to those who do not expect anything .

Well done on doing a bit ... if only everyone would help ... its a pity the " buy forward" idea in coffee shops never realky caught on here ... groups like Simon are always looking foe Souprun volunteers ... if you want to give money give to an organisation

Well done op. I like to do little things like you. Resently started helping out in a kitchen serving the homeless. It's only a couple of hours a week but rewarding none the less.

That's awesome. Really is nice to donate your time. Such a lovely thing to do. Our spare time is precious so I commend anyone willing to give any of their time at all to those in need.

That's something very close to my heart. Such a worthwhile cause. Im not sure I could handle the emotion of seeing of the animals that must come into your care . So sad seeing some animals so badly abused. It's horrifying.

It's not easy and it's really not easy to keep a level head dealing with the person that caused the issue. I specialize in some animals and I've seen some real horror stories over the years. It becomes very disheartening at times. But in the long run it's worth it.

Not so sure I agree with giving money to an organization, some of them have massive running costs and salaries to pay before your money goes where you think it's going.

I do little things, I don't have a lot of money, so I can't fund things, but I have a friendly smile and a warm hello for anyone I meet. It's amazing how quickly a bored shop worker's face lights up if you just say hello.

Some times its not about giving money.

We can all give something thats costs us nothing . Our time i found giving up time to help others who can do something is better.

Personally I live on a shoe string so can't donate lots, but I would say it amounts to a fair bit, for as long as I an remember I've alway put the few pennies loose change in the charity boxes in shops

I just hope the charity box money goes to where it is meant to go, to those that need it

You can lend (and relend) to less fortunate people all around the world. Each individual has their own profile and explain what they are seeking the loan for. Peer to peer direct lending essentially. It’s an excellent way of helping others help themselves. You can filter by nationality/ industry etc and see their history of loans repaid...

It's hard work but it's rewarding. I'm self funded and it can cost a small fortune but if you're willing to put the time and effort in you can change an animals life. Just one thing that gets hard is learning to say no

Further this discussion ; I was in Cork city today strolling about without a care in the world. A beautiful sunny day. Just been for a couple of pints.

Heading for home I go into mc d's for 2 €1 burgers for some reason. I come out and within 20 yards spot a young homeless lad.

He is no more than 20/21 years old. He is sitting with his paper cup in front of him botherinng nobody. I go over to him "hey fella.. do you fancy a burger .. I jave 1 spare?" Homeless lad: "I'd love it if you wouldn't mind giving it to me"

Me "it's only a burger but thank you for being grateful"

Homeless lad: I could do with a spare €2 if you had it.. I know money is tight for people sp if you don't have it that's ok"

I didn't have it. Well I had €2 but I spent it on the burgers a couple of mins previously .

He wishes me well on my day and I head off.

As I head off something sparks in my brain "O can help that lad a bit more than I have done just there.. so I head for the atm and get a tenner and head back in his direction.

He sees me coming and thanks me again for the burger.

I kneel down to talk with him face to face. His expression of surprise and a welcome to chat with him struck me.

On the surface he looks like he has made some mistakes . He looks like he has used more than his fair share of drugs.

I say to him.. "what's up with the 2 quid you need .. I'm not judging you I'm just asking as I prefer to know where my mpney is going when I spend it if I can"

He says.. "I know what you're thinking.. that I'll use it for drugs and for a long time you would have been right but I'm trying my best to get myself and I am short a few euro to stay somewhere clean tonight"

I look at him.. put my hand on his shoulder and say "I'll give you a tenner.. but I'll give it you on the condition that if you find yourself in the position someday that you can help someone in the position you are now that you do the same"

He looked at me for maybe 2-3 seconds and his lip started to quiver. I could see tears in his eyes. Unless the fella can cry on demand I believed the tears to be genuine.

He starts telling me about he has made mistakes in the past but is doing his best to avoid certain people and situations that will lead him back down the same road.

The tenner meant the world to him. Here I am strolling around the glorious sun a few minutes earlier happy as a pig in shit.

I don't know for certain if the tenner went to what he said it would. The important part is that if only for a fee minutes he felt he wasn't shit on someones shoe for what he has done in life. His tears I think a symbol of how much he needed the money.

I hope he did get somewhere clean to sleep the night. Seemed like he wanted to make changes in life. Hopefully he gets around to making them before it's too late.

Use to give money to the homeless wen ever I saw them but then program about con men pretending to be homeless to get money off people put me off it lol
