Border Area

I think the term "troll" is often aimed incorrectly at people. In some situations it is at best lazy and at worst dangerously (perhaps deliberately) inaccurate.

Why are we so quick to demonize people? Do we all truly accurately understand what a troll is?

theguardian.com has a fantastic article on the subject called "the psychology of internet trolls" which does much to define and categorize them. And I don't see too many people on Fab falling into the definition.

Yes, there are some who display the troll traits, but mostly what I see is people making ill judged comments, frustrated guys, people who have had a bad day or are going through difficult situations in their lives and something written by someone else sparks them off; I see lots of people trying to impress, I see a full spectrum of senses of humour that range from caustic, to sophisticated to dizzy and silly.

And all of these types of people occasionally make ill advised comments that often are quickly ridiculed or jumped on and they are branded "trolls".

How about instead if when someone sees something that is potentially unacceptable, they PM the poster and say 'Hey. I think that comment was out of line there'.

How about we collectively use feedback to help people understand they said something unhelpful instead of demonizing?

Just a thought..

A lot of people engage with stuff they don't agree with as posting "I agree" seems pointless to them.

Trolls are people who have one purpose to annoy everyone and thats it. Sometimes people who openly engage in debate are wrongly called trolls cause they come across as argumentative a lot.

Also, I have no idea who you are talking about, I just see people called trolls a lot when they are not.

People who come across as aggressive or petty or generally not nice online are often the "nicest people" offline. I wonder why that is?

I understand the anonymity of being online lets people express themselves differently but why would they want to? Do they get ignored in the outside world and crave attention?

Why is trolling or disrupting appealing?

Also, with regards to fab, it's a place to meet people so why would you not want people to see the "nice" person they'd be meeting offline?

Is it a defense mechanism? Put them off so they don't want to meet you and then stay hidden in your house blaming the Fabbers for meeting because !!!
