I visited a relative with a small baby in temple street yesterday and it was a real eye opener....if you think you have problem, they are very fucking small ones in comparison. So who ever out there is down and out and and thinking suicidal thoughts or that they are not worth a whole lot....chin up, because there is people worse off than you, and you could make a difference to someone’s life. You could be someone soul mate or someone’s best friend....don’t be afraid to ask for help.

A trip to the children hospital puts everything in perspective....live, love, laugh, play, and FAB.....it could be your last

So true. Never judge someone till you walk in there shoes. A friend in need is not to be avoided, if you see someone that looks like they are carrying the world on there shoulders ask them how their doing or if you can help. Karma will return the good will

Your dead right, I wouldn’t be one for keeping in touch really but I managed to drop a message or call to some of my old friends today just to say hello etc.

I agree it puts things in perspective but...

Everyone has their own battles what might seem trivial to some might be the last straw for someone else.

Spot on, if someone is suicidal they are in a very dark place, it's not just a case of telling them someone else has it worse than them

Exactly this. We all have perspective, it doesn't matter a jot when you're walking in darkness.

When your in that blacked out room on your own then nothing or No one else matters. It's only when you manage to get to a better place you begin to realise that maybe I haven't got it too bad after all.

When the darkness consumes you you don't see the light you don't see that you belong that you might make a difference in someone else life. You feel everyone is against you, better off without you there. The kids will better off they'll not see you being sad. You'll not a burden on them.

You can't talk to people you're scared of being judged you become focused on one goal and that's to end it. Everything negative about your life sticks in your mind and there is one solution and one only.

It eases said than done to keep the chin up for people because sometimes in darkness there is no light.

There is help there. But this countries mental health system is a shambles, and the waiting list for help is a very long list. Unless you've to the money to pay for it outright.

A lot won't ask for help especially men as they see it as further reinforcing their thoughts that they have failed and asking for help or showing emotion was drilled into them as a weakness not a strength.

Some have gone reached to firends and been told "I've enough going on I can't be dealing with your problems too"

So it's never as Black and White as some people think. Uless you've stood at the edge of that dark void it's hard to understand"

Being there, not even talking just being there for a person can make a difference.

OP I know your heart was in the right place posting this, but telling people suffering from mental health issues to "chin up".....well...it's a bit careless.

It's kind of the norm though, what people who don't know and who don't understand say to people who do. That's one of the things that makes it hard to open up to other people, you're either going to tell someone who understands or you're going to tell someone who will tell you to chin up and get on with it.

For what it's worth though, I agree that the OP didn't mean to offend. I think he may have been overwhelmed with what the saw in the children's hospital, but you can't compare an orange to an apple, they're totally different things.

Thanks Sally, it’s exactky what I meant. Everyone has troubles and dark days but until you visit the children’s hospital you then realise what others peoples troubles are.

Depression is everywhere and suicidal thoughts are rampant with some people, but they had to realise they have people there for them, and sometime they might need to ask for help. Stop the stigma of mental health and let people know it’s ok to ask for help or a chat.

I lost a friend to suicide last year, and he was well aware that there were plenty of people there for him. He never shyed away from discussing his problems and we were always checking on him and whatnot. It was never a stigma.

In the end it wasnt enough.

Sometimes people just can't ask....

Sometimes people just want to end their pain. I'm sorry about your friend x
