Really you have to take safety into consideration. If its too icy/cold/snowy then just wait.

I live on the top of a hill that leads down onto a busy road. Nearly everyone stops driving and walks when it gets icy.

Mainly because the council wont grit the road, but grit the one below, so people below fly along, and people driving down slide out into traffic.

The problem is that Ireland is not prepared to this kind of weather, in other countries like Holland, Germany, Poland and places that are used to snow, they clean the roads and have some contingency plans... Sadly here even a silly trip to the supermarket by car is hazardous in this weather. So for Irish circumstances, the conditions are extreme.

I just drove to the shop, no problem, the bread shelves were empty, wtf?, if you look at the weather forecast it's all over in two days.

I don't see the big deal with this weather but that's because I'm prepared and equipped for it . I have a 4x4 equipped with snow tyres and recovery gear and get called out to rescue others

I walked into town today, it was a lovely walk. Shops were empty so I tried on a few bits and bobs, then I had a coffee and got the bus home. Overall, a very lovely day. Some slippery footpaths, that's all. I'll go out for another walk tomorrow.

This isnt america though or poland.its ireland.we dont have the same resources or the same stragedys to treating the roads the way they do.im sure there is a few that struggled to work this morning and possibly had to abondon cars or turn back that would love reading some of theese posts.

Correct, they put on snow tyres in winter, and carry wheel chains. In places like czech republic they have bins around the place full of salt and grit and you can spread it yourself over smaller roads.

There is no way the people in them countries would drive around on an inch of snow without it. They 100% would not drive around on snow on summer tyres, which I am pretty sure is illegal in some of them countries.

The moderate temperature in Ireland makes us think conditions like this can be ignored. The government is not ready for them and has admitted they can only keep main roads open, driving in it is just silly.

I completely agree we're not equipped like continental countries that experience strong winters every year. However there's also no need for panic buys if you're bit observant. Keep an eye on the weather forecast, avoid unnecessary journeys but most of all stay cool - the weather shouldn't make that too difficult. It's completely hiked up by the media and government, the snow storm won't last.

Just left work in castlebar its -4. Roads arent gritted. This government needs to start preparing for this weather. Telling people to stay at home is not feasible for everyone. Frontline staff nurses, doctors, garda and fire men and women still have to work. I worked today and was no mention of not coming into work next two days.

Been out driving past three days as a result of bad stuff (not weather).

Tonight was the worst this year. Not 2010 stage and yes, just a few inches of snow but, it's layers of snow, ice, snow, more ice and now snow on top. It's dangerous and even 4x4's having troubles.

No, I'm not in SUV, just ordinary car but, I managed, just about.

I've 2 freezers full of food, enough eggs, milk, flour, etc.

Tomorrow is light the fire and pretend it's Christmas time with kids

I advise everyone does similar and avoids travel.
