Guys just a quickie .... I am about to undergo a not insignificant surgery and was wondering if people on here have wills drawn up.

I don't have much to leave behind but what little I do have I want to make sure it ends up in the right people's hands with as little hassle as possible.

I saw you can download a will from a few websites - has anyone any experience of these and is so how do they hold up legally speaking?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I am aware a hand written will that is signed and witnessed by 2 neutral people (as in they are not mentioned in the will) then it is legally binding in an Irish court of law.

You can get it drafted into a legal document by a solicitor who is also a commissioner of oaths for a reasonable fee.

As long as you can provide identity, proof of sole ownership of what you are bequeathing and are generally following the laws around inheritance then your will should be upheld by the court's if contested.

You will find details of what constitutes a legal will on the citizens information site.

Don't forget to tell a couple of people where your will can be found!

Every adult who has assets should make a will, particularly important for anyone with minor dependants.

For your own peace of mind you're better off having a solicitor draw up your will. It's not that expensive .

After having surgery myself recently this was in my mind too. But everything of worth is named to go to my child so as long as they are looked after I'm happy.

I had one done with a solicitor when I was getting separated, think it was pretty cheap.

Best of luck with your surgery op as regards your will I'd price up a solicitor so you can rest easy mine didn't charge me as I was getting other work done at the time

I have a will written. Like yourself not much in monetary terms but jewellery, music collection, guitar etc I want to go to those that will appreciate it.

I wrote it myself “my words” named an executor to handle it after I’ve gone (who's not going to benefit from it). Two others to witness it again (not benefit). It’s a legalised doc if you get someone in authority to sign it.
