I think the reality is we had a very insular Catholic white society until 20 odd years ago.

The new Irish that have joined us are mostly first generation migrants so we are all processing change.

We as a society are working through changes, not necessarily racism but getting familiar with a new normal.

This is a different situation than a lot of other countries that have experienced generations and generations of inward migration.

I don’t think we are any more racist than anyone else (reverse racism too), I think we are just muddling through a change that is newer for us than it is for some other countries/groups.

Americans are so bigoted it’s frightening - it’s all their way or no way. They also (stupidly) presume they know a little bit more about everything than everyone else. Take em all with a pinch of salt. (That’s my opinion anyway).

As a nation we have a great ability to laugh at ourselves and not be offended. That doesn't transfer well across other countries or groups...remember Eeny, meeny, miny, moe...or the Lord mayor of Dublin gaff on "woodpiles"...Happy holidays..

We're no more racist than any other nation, I think for some reason white English speaking people have some strange guilt in them. I work with alot of Polish lads and today they were tearing into a new Lithuanian guy making Russian jokes all day. We make the same kind of jokes. Black people have told me black people are actually more racist than us. It was a lad that played soccer and I asked him what does he make of the jokes and if he thinks we're racist and he acknowledged nothing mean was ever meant and his own black friend are actually more racist in their everyday language. Every nation and race behave the same in general. We just seems to question ourselves more and the fact that English speakers are so lazy with second languages we never really hear what other people are saying but they hear us cause non English speakers make more of an effort to understand us in general.

Thankfully there aren't genuine fascists organised in Ireland but there is definitely an unacceptable level of racism both in everyday life and structurally with direct provision etc.

My opinion is.......

I figure were all the same, human, were all pink on the inside, if someone accuses you of being racist, they themselves are being more racist by suggesting that there is a difference, however if you're a complete asshole you should be prepared to be treated as such, and not pull a race card to escape the repercussions of your actions!

Having lived in the UK for some time, I will say that we are definitely not as vocally racist. I like to think that we are quite an open, accepting society. Having worked in a very multicultural environment in Ireland for quite some time, I never heard anything like the vocabulary or attitudes that I experienced in London. It was sometimes humorous but was so prevalent in London that there was a very strong undercurrent of actual racism in the tone.

I do hope that Ireland does not become like that.

it's hardly "thriving" though,we are the furthest outpost of Europe with a history of being dominated by outside forces,therefore it stands to reason that we will at this moment in time be inherently wary of "foreigners" but as a whole we are a very welcoming nation ,what may let us down is we don't pander to the PC brigade the same way as the left in the UK and the USA are now doing,we can cut people down with words quite easily. To outsiders this may be viewed as casual racism but we do it to ourselves as much if not more as we do to others.

Irish people are racist as hell, in a very casual way. Historically (despite our view of ourselves) we have always been quite racist immigrants - look at the irish communities objections to Lincoln freeing the slaves. Its not really a surprise we come from a sectarian country, we went abroad and primarily were competing for jobs with newly freed slaves in the US, asians in Australia etc.

Lets not forget our attitude towards the travelling community....

The good news is that we are slowly improving. We now have a more multicultural society and the next generation won't bat an eye at the different skin colours in the country

I think the term racism is not understood entirely. I do think there is quite a bit of xenophobia in the country but that does not automatically correlate to racism. A dislike of different cultures is one thing. A belief that one's own race is superior or a tendency to treat a particular race with disrespect which is obviously a massive ethical issue.

Not everything is racist, not everyrhing is xenophobic either sometimes people are conditioned by many similar experiences of a certain demographic. In turn it can lead to caution. The human brain has evolved with a survival instinct. That doesn't automatically make a person racist.

I have zero time for any sort of race supremacists but feel sometimes people are lumped into racist categories by people with a fundamental misunderstanding of racism.

I think we are! There isn't a week that goes by that i dont cringe at some trough away comment about somebody taking jobs or they taking our dole.

It's embarrassing we were the refugees leaving this cuntry for years and as soon as we got a little money ourselves we forget that.

There isn't a cuntry in the world that Irish people havent moved too.

In my opinion alot of the older generation are very racist but unfortunately the younger generations can be just as bad.

An Asian friend of mine, had brick thrown in his window, he was sitting watching tv. And got hit in the side of the head with it, I was on the phone talking too his friend and it happened their and then as we were talking, he had too go check what happened, as he heard a noise and his friend call. Their have been a few racist attacks reported on crime call that programme, and on the news. A Japanese guy killed not long ago,it was on the news also.so rascism is rampant alright.

You've misunderstood, snowflakes are people that get offended by everything! Life is difficult, laying down crying because someone used a word that you didn't like isnt going to get you far,

No one should but before you confirmed it was a confirmed racist attack I didn't want to rule out fueds and just mindless antisocial behaviour. Most ethic groups fall out with each other here more than they do with the Irish. There's racists of every colour and nationality. To say the Irish are racist doesn't sit well with me. I disagree even if im told of a few cases here and there. No race or country is completely racism free. Ireland does alot more to embrace multiculturalism than most
